Golden Lance Best Sports/Racing Game of 2025

Sports and racing games are as old as gaming itself. From the early days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, sports and racing games have gone hand in hand with every console generation. Each technological development also coincided with leaps in sports/racing game visuals, mechanics, and features. That is why it is always important to celebrate sports/racing games, despite many of the mainstream ones going through live service features. With that said, here is the winner of Lords of Gaming’s 2025 Sports/Racing Game of the Year.

Best Sports/Racing Game – Sonic Racing CrossWorlds

Putting aside my biases, this award was a tough one to give. The year 2025 was notably competitive between the open roads of Mario Kart World and the almost fighting game-turned-racer approach offered by Kirby Air Riders. But Sonic speeding past both racing rivals was something even I, Lord Sonic, couldn’t believe.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds nails the core feeling of arcade racing with its well-designed tracks, the grand return of familiar racing mechanics featured in past Sonic racers, and a shockingly deep gadget system, making player expression a forefront.

In addition, CrossWorld’s Rival system makes every Grand Prix a unique experience with charming character interactions. That, combined with a robust offline and online offering, tight controls, and a fantastic presentation, makes Sonic Racing CrossWorld’s one of the best Sonic racers on the market.

Runner Up for Best Sports/Racing Game – Rematch

Despite a close voting session, Rematch secured the runner‑up spot for Best Sport/Racing Game. The game is a brilliant reimagination of football with fighting‑game precision. Timing, positioning, and technique drive the action, supported by fluid animations and dynamic role‑switching. Shooting and defending demand practice, but the payoff is rewarding, capturing both the chaos and thrill of the sport. While goalkeeping quirks and aiming issues remain, the core gameplay loop is sharp and engaging. This inventive approach sets Rematch apart from traditional football titles.

The game also impresses with cel‑shaded visuals, expressive customization, and evolving stadium environments. These touches add flair without overshadowing the competitive core. Networking hiccups and limited modes hold it back, yet Sloclap’s commitment to balance and onboarding shines through. Accessibility and replayability make it approachable for newcomers while satisfying veterans. Winning the runner‑up award highlights Rematch is indeed a football star in the making.
