CD Projekt Red fans can party in the streets. We got a double dose of Cyberpunk 2077 updates coming. Cyberpunk 2.0 goes live for all players today. Next week, the game’s only planned DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty releases. After the first couple hours, we can say to buckle up for an incredible ride.

Writer’s Note: We were provided a review key by CD Projekt Red.

Phantom Liberty Hits Fast and Hits Hard

After V completes their commitment to the Voodoo Boys, they get a call from a “Songbird.” Songbird directs V towards Dogtown, a notorious self-governing part of Pacifica. Dogtown’s nigh impenetrable, only accessible through checkpoints in and out of the district.

As you get into Dogtown, V watches the New United States of America’s President, Rosalind Meyer, get shot down and crash-land into Dogtown. In addition to saving President Myers, V must dig through a deep conspiracy to figure out the full story.

Have a New Skill Tree

Players get another skill tree upon starting Phantom Liberty called Relic. The Relic chip grants notably strong powers such as enhanced abilities for Arm Cyberware (i.e. Gorilla Arms or Mantis Blades), weak-point highlighting, and stealth. While there’s only three siloed trees for each skill, they all are so strong that they would be broken with more unlockables.

To illustrate their respective strength and balance, there’s only one tree with more than two unlocks. The tree with more than two skills has unlocks for each Arm Cyberware piece (each of which can’t be paired with another). Each Arm gets such catered upgrades that they don’t individually overlap. So it’s not that one tree is overpowered in comparison to the others, it’s that one tree serves additional siloed instances.

Regardless of what you choose, the first few hours are lightning fast with massive amounts of spectacle. In the first couple of hours, players will experience highs they wanted from the original release. CD Projekt Red show how important the opening hours are to hooking players into a story.

Phantom Liberty Rightfully Demands Your Attention

Phantom Liberty and Cyberpunk 2.0 symbiotically help each other. Cyberpunk 2.0 overhauls the core gameplay principles to an exceptional and needed upgrade while Phantom Liberty brings brand new core content to Cyberpunk. Even though both can stand on their own, both also don’t reach their fullest without the other.

We are deeply excited to dig more into that new core content thanks to incredible set pieces that earn long-term, invested, attention.
