Golden Lance Best Narrative

The Best Narrative category is one that typically involves two or three games that stand out above the rest. This year featured tremendous stories. Stories that took us from the furthest depths of space to the nightmares of our own design. Great games that told stories in a wide variety of ways were seemingly released every month. More than that, there were stories for everyone. From the political intrigue found in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes to the wild shenanigans of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Whether you craved cinematic exaltation or a design your own character arc, the games of 2025 were there for you to build your own experience.  With that said, here are the winners of Lords of Gaming’s 2025 Golden Lance Award for Best Narrative.

Best Narrative Winner – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 earns Best Narrative of the Year because it weaves its story, themes, and mechanics into a single emotional journey that never loses its focus. The game’s tale of doomed painters marching toward an impossible fate is told with remarkable restraint and elegance. Every brushstroke, every character interaction, and every revelation builds toward a larger meditation on legacy, sacrifice, and the power of creation.

Rather than relying on exposition, the narrative unfolds through visual storytelling, environmental symbolism, and carefully paced character moments that hit with surprising weight. It balances hope and tragedy beautifully, delivering a story that lingers long after the credits roll. In a year filled with strong narratives, Expedition 33 stands apart for its cohesion, its artistry, and its ability to make players feel the burden—and brilliance—of its world’s final masterpiece.

Runner Up – South of Midnight

The greatest stories come from the heart. Even if everything doesn’t always come together, that powerful ambition and soul can go a long way. Utilizing strong character writing, a powerful musical score, and amazing visual storytelling, South of Midnight bears its earnest spirit firmly on its sleeve.

So much of the game’s story touched my heart in ways few games have ever done. Specifically, the entire set of levels surrounding Rougarou brought genuine tears to my eyes.

Out of everything that was released in 2025, Compulsion’s southern adventure captured my heart. I can’t wait to see what adventures Hazel weaves together in the future.
