Thoughts on Bringing Back Rayman 1
As someone who grew up with the 3D Rayman games (specifically Rayman 2: The Great Escape) and the modern 2D titles (Rayman Origins & Legends), seeing the original getting this attention is amazing.
Classic games like this being brought back for modern-day audiences is important. Specifically, taking a very challenging game like the original Rayman and making it more approachable. Being able to leverage rewinding and infinite lives will go a long way in making some of Rayman 1’s challenging levels more enjoyable.
Preserving History
But more than that, being able to play a more finalized build of the SNES prototype is fantastic for video game preservation. In many ways, the Prototype presents a very different idea of what Rayman could’ve turned into. So, seeing that, then playing the many versions of the original Rayman is a great way to see a game evolve over the course of its development.
Alongside the Prototype is the extensive documentary. Featuring over 50 minutes of new interviews with the original developers, never-before-seen concept art, early sketches, and design documents revealing the origins and evolution of Rayman.
