When people think of Pokemon, many jump to the Game Boy Classics. The GB Pokemon games hold treasured memories for many and Nintendo is no stranger to remaking these classics. The Switch is home to Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu/Eve for example. But they have never re-released the classic Pokemon games on modern hardware, save for digital releases of the GB/GBC games on 3DS. Recent rumors suggest that might be changing with a Pokemon Collection on the way.

Pokemon Classic Collection Coming to Switch in March 2025 Rumor
Discovered by the Hidden Power Podcast, a Twitter/X account that specializes in everything Pocket Monsters, found the following rumor.
Following the usual release model for the franchise, the collections will each house four titles. And for those that want the complete experience, they can buy the ‘complete’ editions of each Pokemon Generation (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald) separately.
A digital release will follow right after Pokemon Day, with a physical release on March 13th. All of this will be revealed during Pokemon Day (February 27th) and the games will have full Pokemon Home support.
Could This Pokemon Collection Rumor be True?
As a Pokemon fan who has grown up alongside the series but fallen out of love in recent years, I am split on the validity of this report.
On one hand, Nintendo has sold the Classic GB/GBC Pokemon games on the Nintendo 3DS E-Shop before. And with a digital release for each game in the collections, this lines up with past release models for Pokemon Legacy titles. Ensuring ease of access for older generations of Pokemon is critical for the competitive space.
The only easily accessible generations on Nintendo Switch are Gen 1 (Pokemon Lets Go), Gen 4 (Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl), and the most recent Generations (Sword/Shield, Scarlet/Violet). With the incoming Pokemon Legends ZA, moves like these further help Pokemon trainers build up their rosters.
Nintendo is known for leveraging lack-of-access to classic titles to their benefit, remaking or remastering them later on future hardware. They could hold off on a modern release of Pokemon Gold/Silver to make a remake down the line and even use the DS remake Soul Silver/Heart Gold to bolster a DS Switch Online line up.
Closing Thoughts
As someone who wants to love the modern Pokemon titles but cannot stomach the horrible quality they’ve released, I would love to revisit my childhood. A collection of Pokemon’s best releases would be awesome for new fans enjoying the Pokemon Horizons anime. In addition, the releases could signify more are on the way.
Pokemon Black & White is hands-down my favorite game in the series. That getting a modern re-release or a proper remake would easily excite me.
