A Pocket Buster Sword – Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Switch 2 Impressions

Released a few years ago on PlayStation 4, Final Fantasy VII Remake is one of the franchise’s biggest releases. Honoring the original PlayStation One release, while also modernizing the combat system, created a new wave of fans eager to experience the rest of the Final Fantasy VII saga.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake series releases on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S with Remake Intergrade in 2026. I was given the opportunity to go hands-on with the Switch 2 edition, and here are my thoughts.

A Familiar Green Hue – What is Final Fantasy VII Remake?

Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade is the updated release for FFVII Remake, originally released on PS4 and rereleased on PS5 and PC (Steam). Adapting the story of FFVII and expanding it across three parts, Remake Intergrade is the first part of the epic story.

The re-release included improved visuals, performance, and even a new campaign exploring Yuffie’s role in the story.

Sharpening the Blade – Hands-On Impressions of the Switch 2 Version

Bringing the game to Nintendo Switch 2, it’s a sight to behold. Square Enix always supported Nintendo with JRPG titles; however, we rarely see bigger AAA releases grace the Switch. Many games, like FFXVI, skip the platform outright because it couldn’t handle it. Or Square Enix brought games like Kingdom Hearts III to Switch via Cloud Versions instead.

After playing through most of the opening Bombing Run Mission in Handheld Mode on Nintendo Switch 2, it was almost one-to-one with the PlayStation 5 release. Seeing such a visually stunning AAA Square Enix release running flawlessly on a handheld Nintendo console felt surreal.

Even during an intense boss encounter, the game maintained its smooth 30 FPS target. I also enjoyed how combat and exploration felt using the Joy-Con 2 controllers. In many ways, it mirrored the games performance on PlayStation 5 in its Quality Mode.

According to the Square Enix PR that I spoke with, the game runs at a locked 30 FPS in 1080p in portable mode.

Closing Thoughts on Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2

I always hoped to see Square Enix’s biggest AAA releases coming to new platforms, specifically Nintendo Switch 2. So being able to play a big title like Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on the Switch 2 is impressive. And with the promise of the remaining FFVII Remake Saga games coming to Nintendo and Xbox platforms in the future, I can’t wait to see how Square Enix continues supporting Nintendo.

Stay tuned for updates on Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, releasing on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S January 22, 2026. The game will also support Xbox Play Anywhere for the Xbox Series X/S release.
