I got to see Marvel MaXimum Collection at GDC

Marvel MaXimum Collection is LRG bringing old titles back. This was actually part of a set of appointments that I attended while at GDC. I even got to tweet out the release date of the title before the official LRG accounts did. Which was sweet of them to allow me to do. It gave my twitter profile a ton of eyes and likes and as a small account who tweets into the abyss, it really was a nice gesture.

What is Maximum Collection?

So what is Marvel Maximum Collection? It is a collection of games remade in what limited run titles their ā€œcarbon engineā€. It sounds fancy but it essentially aims to recreate older games as we remember them back in the day. So what does Marvel Maximum Collection aim to bring back?

The titles are X-Men: The Arcade Game, Captain America and The Avengers, Spider-Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage, Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety, Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge, and Silver Surfer.

I Feel The Carbon

The neat thing about the Carbon Engine is that it seems very flexible to what the developers want to do. It is a preservation first engine. However, the team at LRG has done some neat things that give Marvel Maximum Collection a modern sheen. Such as providing X-Men: The Arcade Game with 6 player online multiplayer and rollback net code. They’ve also added nice quality of life features such as having rewind and save states to ease player frustration. On top of this there are dope CRT and Scanline filters to play around with too.

What is next for LRG?

As for what LRG can be working on after MaXimum Collection? it is up to developers and publishers to talk and connect with the team at Limited Run Games to maybe make some more magic happen. It is also on us to voice our opinions to them as well. Definitely voice which games you would love for them to tackle and bring back next. My pick (which was actually my friends pick) was Jackie Chan Stuntmaster. Shout out to the homie.

Marvel MaXimum Collection launches digitally on March, 27th 2026 through PlayStation, Switch, Xbox and Steam. And you can preorder it physically on Limited Run Games’s website from March 27th through May 24th.
