Pax East 2023 is here, and the Lords from the Iron Lords Podcast and LOGNET are live on the show floor. One of the many games being previewed on the show floor this year is Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-driven action adventure. Take on a perilous journey as Gollum, chasing the only thing precious to him. Gollum is skillful and cunning but also torn by his split personality. One mind, two egos – you decide! We got this interview while I played through the tutorial and first level.
Gameplay
When traversing the dark and dangerous Mordor territory, Gollum is out to protect himself and his precious, the one ring. You will see yourself climbing and crawling through the dark region of Mordor, trying not to be seen. You might even have to strangle a few enemies while you at it. Gollum provides an excellent Lord of the Rings adventure game will lots of stealth and give a mild feel of the Shadow of Mordor-style games when it comes to stealth. Mind you; everything feels pretty smooth for it not being completely finished. The camera rotation was the most significant issue; angles needed some mild work. They did note they are still working on some minor camera work.
Superb Voice Acting
Now if you are a Lord of the Rings fan, you know who Andy Serkis is. He’s the one who portrays Gollum in the Lord of the Rings world. Daedalic Entertainment provides its unique perspective on Gollum with its creative voice acting and world-building. As I was engrossed in the game and I first heard Gollum mutter his first words, I was like, this is Andy Serkis, and it’s not. They did an excellent job on the voice, and it’s so close to Andy’s Gollum that I was shocked.
LOTR Lore
Regarding the lore, fans will be excited to know the developer stressed that there are quite a few nuggets that fans will enjoy. Their play on the story, plus the things you will see in the dark territory of Mordor, will delight any Lord of the Rings fans.
World Design
Gollum does well with what is finished so far. Keep in mind the footage and gameplay are still early access. As I snuck around and traversed the well-built Mordor, I saw how well everything looked that they had finished. I played through the tutorial and the rest of the first stage until I strangled some orcs. I saw some of the second area they had available, and you can tell they still have some work to do. As I talked to after the interview ended, the developer explained how they were finishing up and completing the world-building. Gollum shows much promise, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it once finished.
Everyone can expect it to release on all platforms once Lord of the Rings: Gollum releases.
