Immortals Of Aveum Developer Lays Off Half Of Its Staff
The gaming industry has seen massive growth over the past few years. However, due to rising development costs and challenges. It is as challenging as ever to be a successful studio. All it takes is one release to underperform and then a studio can find itself in trouble. This appears to be what Immortals Of Aveum developer Ascendant Studios has found out.
Immortals Of Aveum Falls Short
Originally reported by Polygon, it appears that Ascendant Studio has had to significantly downsize its workforce. As per the report around 40 employees were laid off due to the game “underperforming”. This is a significant layoff as the studio reportedly had around 80 to 100 employees as of a few months ago. This means Ascendant has cut their operating work force by half. These layoffs were cited as being essential to keep the studio up and running according to one source close to the matter. While Immortals Of Aveum didn’t light the world on fire when it released. It did seem to have good word of mouth from those that picked the game up. However, it just didn’t seem to be enough.
These layoffs are just another negative surge in the gaming industry, as more people are flooding the market looking for stability. This is just weeks after Volition was shut down by Embracer Group which displaced an estimated 200 developers. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is no room for even slightly underperforming in the gaming industry. With the high cost of AAA development it is likely this problem will only get worse in the coming months.
