Mass Effect Companion Tier Ranking

The Mass Effect series, developed by BioWare, stands as one of the most iconic franchises in gaming history. At the heart of the series lies Commander Shepard’s companions—diverse characters from across the galaxy who fight, love, and die for their beliefs. Each companion contributes uniquely to the narrative, gameplay, and emotional resonance of the trilogy and Andromeda. These aren’t my favorite rankings, but a tiered ranking of all the companions based on their story arcs, gameplay value, and impact on the player experience. **Not in a specific order outside of the tiers**

A backdrop with characters form Mass Effect

Criteria for Ranking

  1. Story Depth: How compelling and well-developed the character’s personal arc is.
  2. Gameplay Utility: Combat effectiveness, skillset, and synergy with the team.
  3. Role in the Plot: The significance of their actions and choices in the overarching story.
  4. Player Connection: Their ability to resonate emotionally with players, through humor, tragedy, or romance.

S-Tier: Galaxy’s Best

Garrus during Mass Effect 2 looking at you

1. Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3)

Garrus is the quintessential companion and Shepard’s closest ally. He was someone I used throughout the majority of the series whenever I could. His arc from the frustrated C-Sec officer to the leader of his own vigilante squad represents growth and loyalty. His witty banter, bromance (or romance) with Shepard, and his sharpshooting skills make him indispensable.

2. Tali’Zorah nar Rayya (Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3)

Tali’s deep ties to the Quarian-Geth conflict, tech expertise, and heartfelt character arc earn her a place among the greats. Her romance path is especially touching. Many of the people I talk to love her as a companion.

3. Drack (Nakmor Drack) (Mass Effect Andromeda)

Drack is Andromeda‘s answer to Wrex, bringing Krogan humor, wisdom, and a surprisingly soft heart for his teammates. I personally like Wrex more (this isn’t Chris’s favorite list). His grandfatherly vibe and combat brutality make him an unforgettable companion.

4. Mordin Solus (Mass Effect 2 and 3)

Mordin’s balance of humor, science, and tragic redemption solidifies his place in the top tier. His final moments in Mass Effect 3 are among the most memorable in the series.

A-Tier: Stellar Supporting Cast

Peebee in MAss Effect Andromeda looking at you

5. Peebee (Pelessaria B’Sayle) (Mass Effect Andromeda)

Peebee’s chaotic, thrill-seeking personality provides levity, while her biotic prowess and unique arc exploring Remnant tech add depth. Her romance option is quirky and fun.

6. Liara T’Soni (Mass Effect 1, 2 DLC, 3)

Liara’s evolution from a shy researcher to the Shadow Broker is one of the most significant transformations in the series. Her biotics and deep ties to Shepard elevate her status. She is always my main romance in the series.

7. Vetra Nyx (Mass Effect Andromeda)

A Turian smuggler with a heart of gold, Vetra is fiercely loyal to Ryder and her sister Sid. Her pragmatic approach to survival and her charm make her a standout companion.

8. Jack (Subject Zero) (Mass Effect 2 and 3)

Jack’s arc from a tortured biotic experiment to a mentor for biotic students is deeply rewarding. Her raw intensity contrasts beautifully with her eventual vulnerability.

B-Tier: Solid Contributors

Thane Krios sitting in his room looking at you

9. Thane Krios (Mass Effect 2 and 3)

Thane’s stoic demeanor and focus on redemption make him compelling, though his terminal illness limits his gameplay presence in Mass Effect 3.

10. Jaal Ama Darav (Mass Effect Andromeda)

As an Angaran resistance fighter, Jaal brings cultural insight and emotional depth to the team. His openness about his feelings adds a unique layer to his interactions.

11. Urdnot Wrex (Mass Effect 1 and 3)

Wrex is an iconic character whose leadership and involvement in the Krogan storyline make him unforgettable, though his absence as a squadmate after Mass Effect 1 affects his ranking. One of the ones I used in my party whenever I could.

12. Miranda Lawson (Mass Effect 2 and 3)

Miranda’s Cerberus connections and personal struggles add depth to Mass Effect 2, but her diminished presence in Mass Effect 3 keeps her from higher tiers. Plus who doesn’t like the “assets.”

C-Tier: Mixed Reception

Kaidan Alenko looking at you during conversation

13. Kaidan Alenko (Mass Effect 1 and 3)

Kaidan’s reserved personality and limited development hold him back, though his loyalty and biotic abilities are solid.

14. Ashley Williams (Mass Effect 1 and 3)

Ashley’s arc involves growth in her worldview, but her early xenophobia often alienates many players.

15. James Vega (Mass Effect 3)

James is a capable soldier with a likable personality, but he lacks the depth and complexity of most other companions. Although there is an anime with him as the focus character.

D-Tier: Limited Impact

Jacob Taylor looking at you during a conversation

16. Jacob Taylor (Mass Effect 2 and 3)

Jacob’s straightforward personality and minimal development make him one of the series’ weaker companions.

17. Zaeed Massani (Mass Effect 2 DLC)

Zaeed’s gruff personality and combat prowess are entertaining, but his lack of depth keeps him from standing out.

18. Kasumi Goto (Mass Effect 2 DLC)

Kasumi is charming and useful in combat, but her limited dialogue and personal arc hold her back.

19. Cora Harper (Mass Effect Andromeda)

Cora’s rigid demeanor and obsession with the Asari culture make her polarizing. While she’s effective in combat, her personality feels flat to many players.

20. Liam Kosta (Mass Effect Andromeda)

Liam’s lightheartedness is a nice change of pace, but his character lacks depth compared to others in Mass Effect Andromeda.

Final Thoughts on the Mass Effect Companion Rankings

The addition of Andromeda’s companions brings new dynamics to the Mass Effect experience. While some characters like Drack and Peebee hold their own against the classic crew, others like Liam and Cora fall short of the series’ best. The Mass Effect franchise continues to shine because of its unforgettable characters, and the diversity of its companions ensures every player finds a favorite. Let me know what you think about this tier list and stay tuned for my future top ranking of the Mass Effect companions.
