Sony’s State of Play was heavily rumored to show something Sonic the Hedgehog related, but as to what was unknown. Now that the dust has settled, Sonic X Shadow: Generations confirms a big announcement for the blue hedgehog.

Shadow the Hedgehog Steals the Spotlight

Shadow’s next journey appeared early at the State of Play. However, it will not come alone.

Sony promised a high quality remaster of the critically acclaimed Sonic Generations in this package. The footage at the State of Play lined up with the Xbox Series X performance via BC (4K/60FPS).

In addition, we saw a new Shadow the Hedgehog focused game included in this remaster. The trailer included the stages “Final Chase” and “Westopolis” from Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog respectively, each upgraded like how the main Generations release treated the modern stages.

We saw full camera control mid-combat and the Biolizard boss fight from Sonic Adventure 2. Biolizard echoed the bigger boss fights from 2022’s Sonic Frontiers.

Sony gave additional details on the PlayStation Blog about this upcoming release:

“Sonic X Shadow Generations combines Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic and Shadow gameplay, alongside a collection of beloved 2D and 3D stages from Sonic games over the past 20 years. Sonic Generations will now be modernized for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, while Shadow goes on a standalone journey that explores his backstory and abilities in a way fans have never seen before. This ultimate celebration of Sonic gaming looks better than ever before with upgraded visuals.

“With Sonic x Shadow Generations, we wanted to bring Sonic Generations to PS5 and PS4 while pairing a brand-new Shadow storyline to crossover with the original story.

With Shadow’s portion of the title, players will get to know him more as a character and understand his motivations. It will create the ultimate celebration of Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, and Shadow gameplay that all fans will surely enjoy.” – Takashi Iizuka, Creative Officer, Sonic Team”
