Mortal Kombat is a longstanding franchise known for its brutality. Additionally, the series is home to cultural icons of the fighting game community like Scorpion and Raiden. Mortal Kombat 1 takes place after the events of Mortal Kombat 11.
Liu Kang became a god in order to thwart Kronika. Consequently, he remade the universe in his image. Thus Mortal Kombat 1 serves as a soft reboot of the franchise. The Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer also showcased the return of certain characters. Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Kung Lao, and more are center stage sporting new looks. Liu Kang established a time of peace across the globe. However, new threats arise that demand blood and battle once more.
Kombat Kameos
Mortal Kombat 1 features a new mechanic, Kameos Fighters. They appear to behave similarly to assists during matches. However, these are separate from the main roster. Here is the official explanation from the FAQ website:
Kameo Fighters are a unique roster of partner characters to assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players. These characters are chosen separately from the main roster of fighters.
Kameo Fighters will be a first for the series. However, I worry fan-favorite characters might be excluded from the main roster due to this. Currently, the confirmed Fighters for the main roster are Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Raiden, and more to come.
Pre-orders and Early Access
The release date I find to be the most exciting from the Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer. This game is set to release on September 19, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-ordering the Premium or Kollector’s edition grants early access to the game on September 14. Additionally, a Beta will be live in August for those who pre-ordered any edition on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
That is the first taste of things to come delivered by the Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer. The CGI trailers usually tease gameplay elements in the past. However, this trailer placed a heavy focus on story and world-building. There is an upcoming PlayStation showcase on May 24. Hopefully, fans will be treated to the first gameplay trailer of NetherRealm’s new title. What are your thoughts on the trailer? Excited to enter a whole new world of fatalities?
