New Details On An Upcoming Game From PlayStation Studio Firesprite

In 2021 PlayStation acquired Firesprite, a studio based in Liverpool, UK. With around 300 employees, Firesprite has worked on some VR games including Horizon Call of the Mountain. Along with VR, they have been constantly rumored to be working on a new Twisted Metal game. Additionally, there are job listings tying them to a multiplayer action game (which could fit Twisted Metal). Along with a horror game that they had traditionally been known for prior to being acquired by Sony. Yesterday their future became even less clear.

On this week’s Sacred Symbols Podcast, host Colin Moriarty detailed a new game in early development over at Firesprite. The game is codenamed Project Heartbreak. It is being worked on by a super team of talents including an animation director from Rockstar Games, and a writer from the original Telltale Games. The concept art appears to indicate an island setting with a female lead. Concurrent with the leak, LinkedIn profiles corroborate the story.

What Could This Mean Short Term For Firesprite?

Yet it is unclear what this means for the other games in development at Firesprite. Not being able to release a Twisted Metal game would be a huge missed opportunity for Sony. To not leverage the success of the Peacock series would go against everything they have been working on. Besides a new Twisted Metal seems like a perfect fit for PlayStation right now. Leadership wants live service games, fans want something that is not a 3rd person action-adventure game, and players are constantly looking for that next drip feed of nostalgia.

Unfortunately, likely, we will not know what is going on at Firesprite for some time. Hopefully Twisted Metal is real, and it is close to completion. The good news is, there is an open QA job listed as well,  so it is likely they are working on at least two games. Especially given that Project Heartbreak is in early production.
