What is Halo: Campaign Evolved?
Few games have left a lasting impact on the gaming industry quite like Halo: Combat Evolved. It revolutionized console first-person shooters, introduced one of gaming’s most iconic heroes in Master Chief, and laid the foundation for a franchise that continues to define XBOX more than two decades later. Halo: Campaign Evolved doesn’t simply recreate that legendary experience. It expands upon it with breathtaking visuals, meaningful gameplay improvements, an expanded sandbox, all-new story content, and enough replayability to keep both longtime fans and newcomers coming back for more.
Whether you’ve spent years fighting alongside Master Chief or are stepping onto Installation 04 for the very first time, Halo: Campaign Evolved feels like the definitive way to experience one of gaming’s greatest adventures. By the time the credits rolled, it was clear this wasn’t just a celebration of Halo’s past. It was an evolution that reminded me exactly why this series became a legend in the first place, and throughout this review I’ll explain why Halo: Campaign Evolved stands as one of the finest entries the franchise has ever delivered.

A Story That Still Stands the Test of Time
There are very few video game stories that remain just as compelling decades after their original release, but Halo: Combat Evolved has always been one of them. Halo: Campaign Evolved proves that great storytelling doesn’t need to be completely rewritten to feel impactful. Instead, it respects the original narrative while finding meaningful ways to expand upon it.
Master Chief’s journey across Installation 04 remains every bit as memorable today as it was when players first experienced it. The mystery surrounding Halo, the desperate fight against the Covenant, the shocking introduction of the Flood, and the gradual discovery of the ring’s true purpose all continue to deliver unforgettable moments that have truly stood the test of time. Even knowing many of the story’s biggest twists, I still found myself fully invested from beginning to end.
The Story Truly Begins
The biggest narrative addition comes in the form of Operation: Meteorite, three brand-new prequel missions that take place before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. Rather than feeling like content that was simply added for the sake of having something new, these missions fit naturally into Halo’s universe and help bridge the gap leading into the original campaign.
I genuinely enjoyed stepping into these new missions and seeing events unfold before Master Chief’s arrival on Installation 04. Following Master Chief alongside Sgt. Major Avery Johnson aboard a Covenant vessel introduced new threats, new allies, and several surprises that added meaningful context without overshadowing the legendary campaign that follows.
For longtime Halo fans, Operation: Meteorite serves as a rewarding addition that expands the universe while remaining faithful to everything that made the original story so memorable. It’s exactly the kind of new content I hoped to see. Being respectful of Halo’s legacy while giving fans another reason to dive back into one of gaming’s greatest campaigns. I mean nothing is better than getting some prequel missions to find out how the story is truly being set up.

A Visual Showcase That Honors Halo’s Legacy
Halo: Campaign Evolved is nothing short of spectacular. From the opening moments, it becomes immediately clear just how much care and passion went into modernizing the original Halo experience. Every environment is packed with incredible detail, making Installation 04 feel more alive than ever before. Rolling hills, dense forests, mysterious Forerunner structures, Covenant ships, and massive open battlefields all benefit from stunning lighting, improved textures, and remarkable environmental detail.
The atmosphere deserves just as much praise. Whether I was quietly exploring an abandoned facility or fighting through an all-out battle between humanity and the Covenant, every location pulled me deeper into the world. The lighting, shadows, environmental effects, and world design work together beautifully to create an experience that constantly reminded me why Halo has remained one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.
Upgraded Character Models
Character models have also received a fantastic upgrade while staying faithful to their original designs. Marines, Covenant forces, the Flood, and Master Chief himself all look incredible without sacrificing the classic art direction that longtime fans know and love. Every firefight feels more cinematic thanks to the impressive attention to detail throughout the entire campaign. One of my favorite visual touches appears at the most intense point of the action.
After your shields collapse and your health drops dangerously low, the blinking red health indicator immediately creates a sense of urgency. Suddenly every decision matters. You’re desperately searching for cover, hoping to find a health pack before the next burst of enemy fire ends your mission. It’s a simple visual effect, but it dramatically increases the tension during firefights and makes every encounter feel that much more immersive.
Halo: Campaign Evolved doesn’t simply look beautiful; it enhances the atmosphere of every mission from beginning to end.

Halo’s Legendary Combat Has Never Felt Better
Halo’s combat has always been one of the franchise’s greatest strengths, and Halo: Campaign Evolved proves exactly why that formula continues to stand the test of time.
At its core, the gameplay still revolves around everything fans have loved for decades: intelligent enemy encounters, satisfying gunplay, explosive grenade combat, memorable vehicle sections, and an incredible sandbox that allows firefights to unfold differently every time you play. Rather than reinventing Halo, Campaign Evolved carefully refines the experience with smoother controls, improved movement, better pacing, and gameplay enhancements that feel completely natural.
The expanded sandbox introduces even more variety by allowing players to use iconic weapons from across the Halo franchise inside the Halo: Campaign Evolved campaign for the first time. Fan favorites like the Energy Sword fit seamlessly into the experience. At the same time, expanded vehicle gameplay includes the ability to hijack and drive a Wraith tank. This creates even more opportunities to dominate the battlefield.
Every weapon feels satisfying to use, but my personal favorite continues to be the Sniper Rifle. Few moments in gaming are as rewarding as lining up the perfect shot and watching an enemy fall from halfway across the battlefield.
Many people might feel one way or another about the sprinting in the game, but it doesn’t really bother me. It feels like Halo regardless.

Equipment Add More To Combat
When it comes to equipment, Plasma Grenades remain my absolute favorite. There is still nothing more satisfying than sticking an unsuspecting Elite or Brute before watching them desperately attempt to escape the inevitable explosion. Those moments never get old and remain among the most enjoyable parts of Halo’s combat.
I also found myself constantly taking advantage of Active Camouflage whenever it became available. Sneaking behind unsuspecting Grunts before quietly taking them down with a melee attack without them ever realizing I was there never stopped being entertaining. It adds another enjoyable layer of strategy that rewards players for experimenting with different approaches.
The Brutes also remain one of my favorite enemy types in Halo: Campaign Evolved. Unlike many Covenant enemies, you can’t simply unload ammunition into them and expect an easy victory. Watching their armor gradually break away before they become vulnerable creates encounters that feel rewarding and encourages players to adapt their tactics throughout the fight.
It’s this combination of outstanding enemy design, satisfying weapons, memorable equipment, and player freedom that continues to make Halo’s gameplay some of the very best the first-person shooter genre has to offer.
Campaign Remix Gives Halo New Life
One of my favorite additions in Halo: Campaign Evolved is the new Campaign Remix mode. While Halo’s campaign has always been highly replayable, Campaign Remix takes that replay value to another level by giving players fresh reasons to return long after finishing the story.
After collecting any three Skulls hidden throughout the campaign, Campaign Remix becomes available. This new mode lets players replay completed missions with randomized enemy encounters, remixed weapon placements, new visibility effects, and plenty of Skull-inspired modifiers that keep every mission feeling unpredictable.
Three new modifiers are automatically unlocked alongside Campaign Remix. Adaptation randomizes which enemy factions appear throughout a mission, Reload changes pre-placed weapon pickups, and Armistice prevents enemy factions from fighting one another. While each modifier changes gameplay in different ways, they all encourage players to rethink encounters they’ve likely experienced dozens of times before.

Skulls Provide Endless Replayability
For me, however, collecting the Skulls was just as enjoyable as unlocking Campaign Remix itself.
I remember spending countless hours hunting down Skulls throughout previous Halo games, so seeing them return immediately brought back a wave of nostalgia. Every Skull hidden throughout the campaign gave me another excuse to thoroughly explore each level instead of simply rushing toward the next objective. Discovering one tucked away in a hidden corner was just as satisfying as I remembered, and longtime Halo fans will likely experience that same feeling all over again.
Beyond Campaign Remix, Halo: Campaign Evolved features the largest collection of Skulls ever included in a Halo campaign, with 42 gameplay modifiers that dramatically change how the game can be experienced. Combined with the expanded sandbox, Operation: Meteorite, and countless ways to approach combat, Halo: Campaign Evolved offers an incredible amount of replayability that kept me wanting to jump right back in after finishing the campaign.
Performance
For the overwhelming majority of my time with Halo: Campaign Evolved, the game performed exceptionally well. Combat remained smooth even during larger encounters filled with Covenant forces, explosions, and vehicles, allowing me to stay focused on the action without worrying about technical distractions.
The only issue I encountered during my entire playthrough was a very brief moment of minor lag during a cutscene where Sgt. Major Avery Johnson was speaking with a woman. It lasted only a moment and never happened again. Outside of that single instance, the experience was excellent from beginning to end.
Considering the scale of Halo: Campaign Evolved and the numerous visual improvements throughout the campaign, I came away extremely impressed with how polished the overall experience felt.

Playing Together Is Always Better
One aspect of Halo: Campaign Evolved that I unfortunately wasn’t able to properly evaluate for this review was its cooperative play. While I wasn’t able to test co-op firsthand, Halo has always been a franchise that shines when experienced with friends, and I’m glad to see cooperative play continue to be part of the package. I do wish we had access to online multiplayer in the game, though, which we don’t.
Whether you’re revisiting the campaign together, experimenting with Campaign Remix, or simply creating memorable moments through Halo’s sandbox, having the option to play alongside friends only adds to the game’s replayability. Even though I can’t personally comment on how well the feature performs, I’m always happy to see developers continue supporting cooperative gameplay in an era where it isn’t nearly as common as it once was.
Accessibility
Halo: Campaign Evolved delivers one of the most comprehensive accessibility suites I’ve seen in a first-person shooter, continuing Halo’s long-standing philosophy that players of all backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels should be able to enjoy the fight alongside one another.
Whether you prefer playing with a controller or mouse and keyboard, Halo: Campaign Evolved offers extensive customization options. Players can fully remap controls, choose from multiple stick layouts, fine-tune aiming sensitivity, dead zones, acceleration, and inversion settings, while additional comfort features such as vibration strength, trigger effects, and DualSense functionality can all be adjusted to suit individual preferences.
The visual customization options are equally impressive. Separate field-of-view sliders for first and third-person perspectives, graphics settings that balance image quality and performance, frame generation support, DLSS, customizable HDR settings, and numerous comfort options. This will include motion blur, screen shake, flashing effects, HUD parallax, and damage screen effects that allow players to tailor the experience exactly how they want it.
Audio and readability have also received significant attention. Individual volume sliders for gameplay, dialogue, ambient audio, and menus provide excellent control over the sound mix, while a built-in screen narrator, adjustable subtitle size, font weight, spacing, opacity, and extensive HUD customization make information easier to read and understand. Halo: Campaign Evolved also supports spoken dialogue in 10 languages and written text in 13 languages, making the experience accessible to players around the world.
Even More Accessibility
One feature I especially appreciate is the optional Voice Chat Widget. Not only can it transcribe voice chat into text, but it can also convert text into speech, with multiple customization options for text size, opacity, and display timing. It’s an excellent inclusion that helps make cooperative play more accessible for a wider audience.
Players with color vision deficiencies are also well supported thanks to filters for Deuteranopia, Protanopia, and Tritanopia, along with customizable colors for crosshairs, teammate markers, navigation points, damage indicators, motion tracker icons, and subtitles. These options make it easier for players to personalize the interface without sacrificing readability during intense firefights.
Finally, Halo: Campaign Evolved introduces a customizable difficulty modifier preset system, allowing players to tailor the overall challenge to better match their individual preferences and accessibility needs. Combined with the extensive control, audio, visual, and interface options available throughout the game, Halo: Campaign Evolved delivers an accessibility package that is every bit as impressive as the rest of the experience.
Final Verdict
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remarkable celebration of one of gaming’s greatest first-person shooters, successfully modernizing a beloved classic while preserving everything that made the original so special. From its stunning visuals, timeless campaign, and exceptional gunplay to the welcome addition of Operation: Meteorite and the endless replayability offered by Campaign Remix and its 42 Skulls, this is the definitive way to experience Master Chief’s original adventure. Aside from one brief moment of minor lag during a cutscene and not being able to fully evaluate the co-op experience, I encountered virtually no issues throughout my playthrough. Whether you’re a longtime Halo fan or experiencing the journey for the first time, Halo: Campaign Evolved is an easy recommendation and one of the best games I’ve played this year.
