On Wednesday, Sony published PS5 update 20.02-2.50 for the console’s operating system. The latest patch brings system stability updates along with two significant improvements. Most importantly the PS4 installation bug has been fixed. Praise the sun.

PS4 versions of disc-based games will no longer auto-install. If you have PS4 copies of games like Man Eater, Borderland 3, or Mortal Kombat 11 these have free PS5 upgrades. Often when booting up the console with the disc still installed, the PS4 version would automatically begin installing. Giving you both the PS4 and PS5 version of the game. At launch, this was creating significant confusion, as many players were reporting accidentally launching the PS4 versions of games.

With this update you are now free to head to your library, sort by platform, select PS4 and remove those PS5 games that have been installed twice. This will prevent you from accidentally playing the PS4 version of your games. Additionally, freeing up some much-needed space. Especially now that we are going on 90 days after launch and Sony has yet to announce storage expansion options.

Along with the stability updates and PS4 disc install issues, Sony has added the ability to edit video clips from the media gallery. I have walked through the console menu and media features a dozen times and this is something I swear has been working for some time. On the other hand, I can share videos to Twitter again. I almost wonder if they mean, “to share from the media gallery.” At launch, sharing to Twitter worked but it crashed my console. A lot. In January, I noticed the ability to post to Twitter was disabled. Yet on Wednesday, it started working again.

PS5 update 20.02-2.50 seems like the first meaningful update to the PS5 system software. Now we just need folders, DualSense PSVR support, and expandable storage. There is also an outstanding issue involving some DLC not being recognized by PS4 games upgraded to PS5. PS5 early adopters are experiencing an OS that is really just not ready yet. Just like the PS4, in due time, we will not even be able to recognize the operating system we are playing on today.
