Acquisition season continues today as the developers of Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero have just been acquired. This news comes from a press release post through PUBG‘s developer Kraftons’ website.

The Subnautica developers have always created incredibly unique experiences. Even if the experiences are mostly terrifying. But have always launched into early access. So reading the below quote from the press release:
Unknown Worlds will function as an independent game development studio wholly owned by KRAFTON and will continue to operate globally with talent seated throughout the world. Unknown Worlds’ structure and leadership will remain in place to retain its unique creative identity. In addition to ongoing updates for Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, Unknown Worlds is currently working on a new genre-defining game, which is slated to launch into early access in 2022.
It is a relief that the studio will maintain autonomy. As with some acquisitions, the culture and projects of development studios tend to change. But with them still relying on early access for their games, it begs the question. Will they have the proper funding? Or is early access a way to enhance the concept of their projects through community feedback? Regardless, this is great news for the talented team.
