Destiny 2 Breaks Concurrent Player Record With Lightfall Expansion
Over the past several years we have seen service games come and go. While some go on to find massive success such as Fortnite, and Sea of Thieves. Other games unfortunately never find their stride, such as the recently shut down Babylon’s Fall from Platinum Games. There is no defined formula to success with service games, and sometimes updates don’t resonate with players. Taking player feedback and making meaningful changes is not always easy. No matter how hard it can get, and how much doom and gloom can sometimes surround a game. Some developers are able to find the “Light” at the end of the tunnel and do something special. This is something that Bungie has done quite successfully with Destiny 2.
Destiny 2 Finds Life In Lightfall
This week is the highly anticipated release of Bungie’s latest expansion in Destiny 2. Lightfall is the latest expansion in the long-running looter shooter franchise. After The Witch Queen expansion drove even more players to the game back in 2022. The Witch Queen expansion was released to glowing reviews and brought many players back to the world of Destiny 2. Not only did it bring old players back, but it also introduced a wealth of new players to the shooter. Since severing its ties with Activision in 2019, Bungie has been hard at work shaping the game addressing a long list of fan feedback. The updates and expansions have not always been perfect, but it does not seem to deter Bungie from their love for this shooter.
Now it appears all this hard work has paid off with a massive launch for Lightfall today, which saw Destiny 2 shatter its concurrent player records on Steam. Earlier today, Destiny 2 reached 316k concurrent players on Steam as per SteamDB. This shattered the previous record of just over 290k which was set last year during the launch of the Witch Queen expansion. While the jury is still out on whether Lightfall is everything fans have hoped for. There is no doubt that Bungie has engaged its community, and got them excited for the next step in the series.
