PAX East 2023: Alone In The Dark Hands On Impressions

PAX East 2023 is here, the Lords from the Iron Lords Podcast and LOGNET are live on the show floor. One of the many games being previewed on the show floor this year is Alone In The Dark. We have had our chance to play this brand new take on the early 90s franchise.

Most readers are going to recognize the name Alone In The Dark from the early 2000s Dreamcast and Wii horror game. However, that version has no connection to this brand new entry. Instead, this Alone In The Dark is an “all-new reimagining” of the early 90s 3DO and DOS Alone In The Dark games. The team plans to cover the story elements from the very first three Alone In The Dark games.

Our demo was a full playthrough of the Grace In The Dark Prologue. It takes place before the game and you play as Grace, a small child. The demo does not tell you much but it does set the stage for the atmosphere and horror elements you will encounter in the main game. The team plans on releasing the demo to the public later this year. This will lead up to a big marketing push and the yet to be announced release date of Alone In The Dark.

The game is going to lean on four major pillars, story, puzzles, exploring, and combat. During our playthrough, we saw highly detailed lighting and environmental assets. Also, a setting that takes place just a few miles away from downtown New Orleans. Unfortunately, the Grace In The Dark Prologue does not have anything in the way of combat. Yet what horror elements are there are solid.

The team did note that there will be two different playthroughs of the main game, each one will be six to ten hours. There will be an option for 60 frames per second performance mode, as well as a 4K visual enhancement mode.

Alone In The Dark is coming to current-gen consoles and PC sometime soon. While publisher THQ Nordic is not able to commit to a release date, it must be close. The Grace In The Dark Prologue will be released to the general public this year. It is very likely that we hear more about Alone In The Dark this summer during the major news cycle.
