Super Mario Bros Defeat Evil Dead Rising Again
The Super Mario Bros Movie stayed at the box office this past weekend. Nintendo’s flagship property has crossed that billion mark. Evil Dead Rising took over the second spot with a healthy second weekend. So far this film has done great for a movie that was supposed to be released on HBO Max.
Nothing can stop Super Mario Bros from taking over the top spot at the box office this weekend. Well, nothing this week. A Marvel juggernaught is right around the corner with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. With $40 million this weekend it pushes the Mario Bros into $1 billion in the worldwide market. It’s great to see other movies besides a superhero movie make that kind of money. Fans should expect these kinds of numbers for the new Fast and Furious movie.
Fans of the horror series Evil Dead have helped Evil Dead Rising gross $66 million worldwide. For a film that was supposed to go be released on a streaming service. That’s a great start to a hopeful spark in making more movies. The Evil Dead series has always been one of my favorites since I was little. A special rerelease also happened this weekend. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi grossed $4.6 million. Not all movies that get an anniversary rerelease do that well. Even Scream VI was able to make a little extra cash this weekend. It grossed $230,303 while this movie was also released digitally. That film is sitting at $168 million worldwide as it nears the end of its theatrical run.
Weekend Top Three
3. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret: $6.8 million

1. The Super Mario Bros Movie: $40 million
Next weekend four movies will be released in a wide number of theaters. Unconditional, Love Again, What’s Love Got to do With It?, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Where will each of these moves land in the top ten? At this point, no one really knows except that Marvel should come in number one. Even with the fatigue that has hit, fans want to see what happens to this crazy team that wasn’t supposed to do well in the first place.
