PlatinumGames released a DLC expansion for The Wonderful 101 Remastered called The Wonderful One: After School Hero. After School Hero marks the first expansion for the game since its original release on the Wii U.

In a press release, the developer wrote “PlatinumGames Inc. released its unique side-scrolling shooter experience, The Wonderful One: After School Hero game for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam platforms. This is a standalone version of the free DLC released for the owners of The Wonderful 101: Remastered game.”

Supervising Director Hideki Kamiya, Producer Yuji Nakao, and Director Yosuke Matsumura all gave additional statements too.

Kamiya wrote about his excitement to return to The Wonderful 101. “The idea to focus on Luka’s heroic ventures not depicted in the main story, as well as making the experience a classic side-scrolling type of game completely different to The Wonderful 101 gameplay, both came out naturally.”

Nakao addressed why the game, funded on Kickstarter, does not require the main game to play. “Originally, we created The Wonderful One: After School Hero for our fans, but as we developed the game, it naturally morphed into something new that worked as a standalone 2D action game. With this we wanted players who did not own The Wonderful 101: Remastered or did not know about the game or the universe to get their hands on The Wonderful One: After School Hero

Matsumura highlighted the gameplay. He wrote, “…you can freely fire your lasers 360 degrees with the right stick on your controller! By simply moving the stick, you can fire lasers in any direction you want, literally blasting away enemies with a “bang” as they come at you.”

The expansion follows Luka’s early days, before he joins the Wonderful 100. To get there, Luka goes through daily training drills in the CENTINELS training program. Players direct Luka during his first-grade year to defeat oncoming enemies.

Players have three different modes to enjoy: Arcade, Challenge, and Caravan. Arcade gives you Luka’s story from start to finish. Challenge lets you pick and choose which drills you play. Finally, Caravan lets you see how many points you can gain in five minutes on a drill.
