Guardians, the end draws near. Bungie set players on a legendary course of adventure nine years ago. As a result, Destiny 2 created amazing highs for guardians. However, the community also suffered some lows over the years especially last season. Fans everywhere hoped The Final Shape showcase delivered a vision of how this story ends and things to come. Bungie replied with that and more. Here is the recap.
The Pale Heart
The Final Shape showcase opened with a reveal trailer for the next expansion. This promises to be the end of the “Light and Darkness” saga. Subsequently, every ally you have made along the way stands with you in this final assault against the Witness. This includes the formally deceased, Cayde-6, voiced by Nathan Fillion.
Additionally, the Witness aims to bring order to a chaotic galaxy. They intend to instill their will over life through a perfect, “Final Shape.” Subsequently, they need the “Pale Heart” of the Traveler to accomplish this goal. It is up to the guardians and their allies to stop this from happening once and for all.
Guardians find a culmination of their journey brought to life inside the Traveler. Life is shaped based on your memories as you cleave through the Witness’ forces in the campaign. Furthermore, this is the first linear destination Bungie has created. The narrative is heavily told through the environment as much as the story beats throughout the campaign.
Feed Your Light
The Final Shape showcase also revealed new powers as the Light strengthens guardians inside the Traveller. The Witness will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. Show them the Light.
Warlock Solar Super
Warlocks gain a new Solar super. This super empowers your guardians with solar energy, empowering your abilities and drastically reducing cooldowns. It is a callback to the Radiant Super from the previous game, and you also empower ally solar weapons during the Super. Additionally, a Solar familiar will spawn when casting your rift. This familiar seeks out enemies before exploding and scorching those in the vicinity.
Titan Void Super
Bungie is finally giving Titans a projectile, one-off super. This super summons Void axes(three) to be thrown in succession. Subsequently, these cause Void explosions upon impact and can be wielded by guardians afterward.
Hunter Arc Super
Hunters harness Arc energy into three throwing knives. Each knife is thrown at a point separately. The Hunter then teleports to the knife and decimates the area in a whirlwind of blades and Arc energy.
Tales of the Light
Bungie introduced a new feature to help players catch up on the story of Destiny 2. “Timeline Reflections” allows players to replay key missions from major narrative beats found in the saga. These missions are great ways to introduce players to pivotal moments like the death of Cayde-6. This feature is available now in the Timeline node of the Director. Three missions are available for now, but Bungie plans to add more in the future.
Goodbye to Seasons
Next, The Final Shape showcase addressed the question of what comes next. Destiny 2 uses a seasonal model for its live-service storytelling. However, these seasons will be replaced by “Episodes” after this final expansion of the saga.
These Episodes offer a grander scale in terms of story-telling. There will be three Episodes in 2024 compared to the usual four seasons. Additionally, each episode can be played and enjoyed by anyone as a standalone regardless of prior lore knowledge. Episodes are divided into three Acts spaced at six-week increments. These Acts contain new weapons, artifacts, progression passes, and more.
Season of the Witch
Season of the Witch is the next season along the journey to The Final Shape. This season went live at the conclusion of The Final Shape Showcase. The Vanguard must seek help from Savathûn. However, Xivu Arath proves to be a thorn in their side. She serves as the Witness’ best general; she feeds from war and conflict.
Eris Morn decides to use Hive magic against her. Guardians must aid Eris to become powerful enough to stop the Hive God of War. On the other hand, a different Hive god is reborn.
Crota’s End Reprisal
“Crota’s End” is the reprised raid of this season. Here, guardians enter the Hellmouth to reach Crota’s throne world. The son of Oryx can only be stopped if he is slain there. The raid features reprised weapons and armor along with the return of the exotic, Necrochasm.
This ten-year journey is almost over. Bungie showed their passion for this world and dedication to its future during The Final Shape showcase. All that is left is for this expansion to deliver. Players can preorder The Final Shape here including a collector’s edition. The collector’s edition comes with sentimental memorabilia including a replica of the original Tower.
