This Fantasy is Final – Final Fantasy Games Leaving PlayStation Plus Tiers

A major draw for services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium are the libraries. Both services offer legacy content, with PlayStation’s offering arguably offering some of the best out there.  One key reason for that, was its inclusion of Final Fantasy into the service.

Nearly every game in the franchise was on the platform, cementing the PlayStation as the place to play the series.

But it seems the fantasy must come to an end. While Final Fantasy VII Remake remains, the rest of the series is vanishing into the ether.

Final Fantasy Series Leaving PlayStation Plus Tiers

Discovered by Twitter/X user Genki, the legacy Final Fantasy games will be leaving PlayStation Plus Extra on May 21st.

Only Final Fantasy VII Remake and its Intergrade DLC remain on the service. Unlike on Xbox Game Pass where you could buy the games at a discounted price when they leave the service, that isn’t the case with games leaving PlayStation Plus Extra.

What Does this Mean?

The series originally was on Xbox Game Pass before coming to PlayStation Plus years later, so them leaving one service could imply them going into a different one. This has happened for many indie titles that were once Game Pass releases, coming to PlayStation Plus Extra months to a year later.

But it also implies to me, that whatever deal Sony has with Square Enix is being changed. One sign of this was shown in a Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth trailer, having a very short exclusivity window on console.

Overall Thoughts

With these older games going on sale often, it’s not the biggest loss of them leaving PlayStation Plus. And there are always the possibility other games, like Final Fantasy XVI will replace the games leaving the service.

But will you be playing these classics before they leave PS Plus? Or explore a different fantasy? Let us know in the comments below!
