The world is excited about the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, releasing on November 19th, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Rockstar and Netflix teamed up to showcase an Extended Look for the upcoming open-world game.
Giving a glimpse of what modern Vice City has to offer, this Extended Look showcased several elements of Rockstar’s biggest game.
Overview of the Extended Look
Released on Netflix for a few hours, the Extended Look is out now on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel. Kicking off with the game’s dual protagonists in one of the main story missions, the twenty-six-minute showcase highlights what GTA VI has to offer.
The Odd Couple – Lucia and Jason
The strongest element revealed was seeing the dynamic between Lucia and Jason. Freely switching between them at any time, the duo are connected. This was showcased in combat encounters and general gameplay. For example, Lucia is driving the getaway car while Jason is shooting cops in the backseat. And when you switched between the characters, you were either shooting or driving.
In addition, Lucia and Jason are a couple, so their budding relationship is the heartbeat of GTAVI’s story.
Dynamic Romance – Relationship System
While not fully showcased in the Extended Look, outlets that went hands-on with GTAVI. IGN India described how their relationship impacts the narrative.
As well as jumping between the two characters GTA 5-style, you can spend time roaming and robbing the world together as a couple, which strengthens your relationship. The more time you hang out together, the better their bond. Can you force them to break up if you solely play as Lucia and treat Jason like human wallpaper? No. There’s no dumping your significant other, but you can expect the type of affinity you build to be reflected in the story. Additionally, being the perfect couple doesn’t provide any gameplay benefits, and so there’s no need to put extra effort into the relationship if you don’t want to. It’s completely optional; they’ll be there for each other no matter if you regularly interact with the couple mechanics or ignore them completely.
The Power of the Next Generation – Visuals and Presentation
Leveraging the full power of the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, Rockstar delivers a stunning open world. Reflections are pristine, cars look stylish, and animation details expected from the studio behind Red Dead Redemption 2 are on full display.
The stunning visuals come at a clear cost, however. According to Flow Games, the game currently runs at 30 FPS. It was stated at the end of the Extended Look that GTA VI was running on a base PlayStation 5, so potentially a 40 FPS option could be available at or after launch.
Overall Thoughts on the GTA VI Extended Look
As someone who loves Rockstar Games’ more off-shoot titles like Bully or The Warriors, I’m not that excited about GTA VI. Even so, the stunning visuals and promise of a deep relationship between the lead protagonists have me curious about how the final game will turn out.
