New Fable Gameplay Shows off Heroes Guild Quest, Skill Trees and More

2026 has been a pivotal year for Playground Games’ reboot of Fable. It has received numerous showings this year alone that have all been positively received. The first real demo at the Developer_Direct in January gave eager fans a good enough peek behind the curtain. But the one in June really let the game speak for itself, only to be followed up at this year’s Gamescom, where a new demo from Playground Games showed off a little more of its approach to the game’s story and gave a glimpse at “strength, skill and will” gameplay systems. As well as a second gameplay demo that was focused on just gameplay. Here is everything we learned yesterday!

A Look at Bowerstone, and the Heroes Guild in Fable

While other trailers for the game gave brief glimpses of the most popular city in the series, Bowerstone, this trailer gave us a nice, juicy cut of it. Simply put, the way the houses are laid out, how the NPCs are going about their days, and the general aesthetic of the city is absolutely gorgeous, busy, and detailed beyond belief. The player visited their happy home before delving into a little bit of the story for the Heroes Guild.

What was shown of the story for the Heroes Guild was admittedly short but left a lot to be excited about. For one, the reimagining of the guild looked fantastic, albeit empty and only having Humphry from the trailer in 2024 asleep and asking for a beer when awoken. This prompted a little backstory regarding him and how the guild ended up in its empty state. Ending with a hunt for the person that Humphry lost the deeds for the guild to. The combat against normal NPCs looked good, but the boss fight looked strange, as it was barely reacting to anything the player was doing.

We also got to see a brief glimpse of the skill trees for Strength, Skill, and Will. You can earn skill points and unlock different abilities pertaining to each one. They only showed the player unlocking a spell that sends magical swords at foes, however. The demo mentioned the new augment system for Fable called “Willstones”. These will let you customize your weapon with combos and special abilities. This was not detailed in the demo, however.

The full demo can be found below!

But that was not all that was shown for Fable yesterday. There was also a second that was strictly just gameplay, including a cool-looking boss fight in Wraithmarsh.

What We Learned from the Second Gameplay Demo

This demo from Gameriot was, again, purely focused on gameplay. There is zero commentary as well, so if you would like to watch it for yourself, it will be down below:

This gameplay consisted of a lot of heavy hammer combat, and some cool spells mixed in. Including a little quirk with a spell that turns enemies into chickens. Considering the player in the demo is fighting skeletal enemies, when he turns one into a chicken, it also becomes a skeleton. It is a neat touch!

This gameplay also showed companion gameplay with Humphry and also included a boss fight with a ghostly lantern wraith shrouded by fog. This boss fight was separated into different encounters that allowed the player to also show off some crossbow gameplay. The spells were definitely a highlight during this gameplay. Fireballs, lightning strikes, and teleporting immediately to enemies all flowed excellently with the bow and crossbow gameplay and, of course, heavy hammer swings!
