Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Review – Zero Dark Glory

Modern Warfare 4 Cover Art Price and Ghost

Through the decades (yes, decades by now!), Call of Duty campaigns can feel disjointed and confusing thanks to a profound number of plot holes. However, since 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot, the different Call of Duty studios have largely begun tightening the campaign experience. Yes, there are outliers like Black Ops 7, where most of the game is a hallucination. But for every BO7 trip, you get solid entries like MW1, Black Ops 6, and now Modern Warfare 4. I would dare say that MW4 is the most immersive and tightest campaign in Call of Duty’s recent history.

Yet Another Globe-Trotting Campaign That Doesn’t Relent

Modern Warfare 4 Captain PRice Looking Intensely to the Side
  • The campaign follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier navigating a chaotic North Korean invasion in Seoul, alongside Captain Price’s parallel mission pursuing a powerful weapon outside the system.
  • The narrative blends gritty boots-on-the-ground combat with broader global covert operations and shifting geopolitical alliances.
  • The game caused public uproar in South Korea from politicians and civic groups alike.

The Modern Warfare 4 campaign puts players in the boots of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier experiencing combat for the first time as a North Korean invasion throws the Korean Peninsula into chaos. In particular, the opening sequence in downtown Seoul is haunting. What starts as a routine patrol with a quick stop at a mini-market is suddenly interrupted when the city lights lose power, and then all hell breaks loose as missile strikes hit surrounding buildings. Naturally, this turns Seoul into a conflict zone in the blink of an eye. Park and his squad move through collapsing cities, large-scale battles, and counteroffensives. No wonder the game caused intense backlash from South Korean politicians and civic groups.

In parallel to the Korean conflict, Modern Warfare 4 also moves the story of Captain Price. As a direct sequel to the events of the MW remake and MW2,  Price now finds himself operating outside the system and pursuing a weapon capable of shifting the balance of power. His personal hunt for revenge gradually pulls him into a much larger conflict involving uneasy alliances, covert operations, and consequences that stretch well beyond Korea.

A Refreshing Setting in Modern Warfare 4

  • The campaign offers varied gameplay across 16 fast-paced missions lasting 6 to 8 hours, blending large-scale combat and covert missions while concluding the Captain Price and Taskforce 141 story arc.
  • Set in Korea as the starting point for a global crisis, the story expands player perspectives by featuring unexpected playable sides within its intricate geopolitical conflict.

Korea is a refreshing setting for Modern Warfare 4, giving the Campaign a different backdrop while retaining the military-focused tone the series is known for. The story uses the conflict as the starting point for a wider global crisis, mixing political escalation and shadow operations with boots-on-the-ground warfare. Between large-scale combat, covert missions, combined-arms encounters, and the franchise’s familiar cinematic set pieces, the Campaign looks to offer plenty of variety while keeping the action grounded at the soldier level.

Without going into spoilers, MW4 will also put players in the shoes of unexpected sides throughout the campaign. These moments are truly rewarding and expand the perspectives of the game’s complicated, yet smartly intertwined, geopolitical conflict. Best of all, the game puts a solid conclusion to the Captain Price and Taskforce 141 story arc.

The 16 campaign missions unfold at a frenetic pace. It will take around 6 to 8 hours to go through the game. Undoubtedly, your play time will depend on how players engage with one particular mission.

DMZ Trainer Wheels

  • The “Stranded” campaign mission acts as natural DMZ training by immersing Pvt. Park in enemy territory to teach mechanics like supply collection and looting.
  • While its open-world nature might disrupt the traditional flow for some, it successfully integrates into the narrative to preview upcoming DMZ and Warzone seasons.

During the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, a mission called “Stranded” fits the recent mold, using one of the campaign missions as DMZ training. That mission in particular throws Pvt. Park into enemy territory with multiple objectives to complete. Of course, this is where the game teaches players about collecting supplies, finding keycodes to open locked containers/doors for loot, etc.

Some might find it forced or find the open-world nature disruptive to the game’s flow, but overall I felt it was a nice break in pace and gave a nice taste of what to expect in the upcoming DMZ/Warzone seasons for the year. What differentiates MW4’s DMZ training mission is that it fits nicely in the game’s Korean conflict narrative, rather than just awkwardly forcing the mission in the campaign. So, kudos to Infinity Ward and the other COD studios for embedding it naturally.

All Things Come to an End – Modern Warfare 4

Modern Warfare 4 Price Looking down at his Phone
  • The game definitively concludes the story arc from the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, bringing a satisfying end to Captain Price and Taskforce 141’s seven-year journey.
  • The credits feature a touching “In Memoriam” tribute to contributors like Preetam Raj Bordoloi, Rainer Yang, and Vince Zampella as the franchise wraps up this chapter.

Long-running games have a tendency to always leave players at a cliffhanger. This ensures context for upcoming sequels. Now, since games take ages to ship, developers do not have that same luxury and can close off arcs nicely. The recent God of War entries come to find with only 2 installments to finish off the Viking saga.

Now, with Modern Warfare 4, the game clearly finishes off the story arc from the Modern Warfare reboot from 2019 and definitively concludes it, without going into spoilers. The final moments provided respite for fans’ 7-year foray with Price and his TF 141 buddies. The ending credits have a touching moment at the beginning where the “In Memoriam” listing of developers associated with Call of Duty appears. This includes Preetam Raj Bordoloi, Rainer Yang, and, of course, Vince Zampella. But now, it’ll be interesting to see where Infinity Ward takes their next game, most likely due in 2029.

Top Tier Shooting, As Usual

Modern Warfare 4 M4 Rifle in Train Station
  • Modern Warfare 4 stands out as a top-tier arcade shooter featuring over 33 weapons and 28 attachment options paired with smooth, responsive gunplay.
  • The game’s exceptional sound design gives weapons a powerful impact, highlighted by satisfying long-range engagement with the MAR-9 semi-automatic marksman rifle.

Modern Warfare 4 remains one of the industry’s best arcade shooters. With over 33 different weapons and 28 attachment gear, there’s plenty to mix and match to hone in on your perfect weapon. When it comes to the feel and sound of the guns, they remain as satisfying as ever.

Gunplay is smooth and provides the right amount of feedback that players know all too well. However, the gunplay’s sound design takes the cake. Firing off weapons has a real umph to it, which Infinity Ward has mastered for multiple decades at this point. My favorite gun was the MAR-9 semi-automatic marksman rifle because it was so satisfying to pick off enemies from a distance with the resonating gun sounds.

Tons of Accessibility Options in Modern Warfare 4

  • Modern Warfare 4 offers comprehensive accessibility features, including simplified control presets, low motor strain support, visual aids, and motion sickness reduction.
  • Players can customize their experience through a wide variety of individual toggleable options to ensure the game is accessible to a broader audience.

Like previous Call of Duty entries, Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t skimp on accessibility features. From simplified control presets to low motor strain, visual support, and even motion sickness reduction, MW4 covers all its bases. Within each accessibility option are tons of individual options that players can toggle on and off. This includes motion sickness reduction, visual cues, and a ton of other toggleable options. No doubt, the game continues to do a phenomenal job ensuring that more people can enjoy the game.

Modern Warfare 4 Graphics

Modern Warfare 4 In Night Club with Pistol Equipped
  • Modern Warfare 4 delivers detailed character models, weapons, lighting, and striking environments, complemented by a star-studded cast including Mads Mikkelsen, María Elisa Camargo, and Barry Sloane.
  • High-quality, fast-paced cutscenes elevate the presentation, though minor transitions between cinematics and gameplay are noticeable.

When it comes to the graphics department, Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t disappoint for the most part. Guns look immaculate and highly detailed. Player models retain their expected high level of detail, as players have come to expect.

Environments look phenomenal, especially the North Korean Supreme Leader Palace, which looks like it was ripped straight out of a news report. However, some of the icy locations in the game can look flat at times. However, one thing that stood out was the game’s impeccable lighting. Whether going through a New York City nightclub or a North Korean underground tunnel, the lighting effects were always impressive and stole the graphical vista with their profound display.

Of course, COD is known for bringing Hollywood talent to bring its campaigns to life. Modern Warfare 4 brings together a strong ensemble of talent to bring the global conflict to life. This includes Mads Mikkelsen (The Archer), María Elisa Camargo (Valeria Garza), and Barry Sloane (John Price). Their likeness and stellar performances help elevate this year’s campaign above previous entries.

The high-quality cutscenes demand your attention and, like the game’s pacing, are fast, quick, and in your face. However, there is a noticeable transition when going from a cutscene to in-game, but it is a minor complaint given the entire package. So kudos to the casting, motion capture, and the rest of the developer team on this front.

Final Thoughts on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

All things come to an end, and Modern Warfare 4 brings a strong conclusion to one of gaming’s longest-running annual franchises. This is one of the series’ tightest and most enthralling campaigns since the 2019 reboot and delivers a high-octane ride, with a noticeable DMZ training mission in the middle that might irk some players. All in all, Modern Warfare 4 brings a strong ending in a new and refreshing setting that will undoubtedly resonate strongly with players.
