Shang-Chi Breaks Records and Dominates the Box Office
With the holiday weekend almost over it’s time to call this weekend’s box office winner. Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had no issues taking the top spot. In fact, at this point, the movie is doing exceptionally well that it has broken a Labor Day weekend record.
Today, after being released on Thursday Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has grossed $83.5 million. That is just an estimated number it could easily be well over $90 million by the end of tomorrow. At this moment the film is sitting at $139.7 million worldwide. Expect that number to climb. While this movie didn’t get the same treatment as Black Widow with a Disney+ release, look for this movie to be on the streaming platform 45 days after its theatrical release.
Labor Day Weekend movies usually do alright but not phenomenally. During this time the Summer is over and everyone is back in school in the United States. Yet, we usually don’t have a pandemic that has caused anything but chaos around the world. To see this film go out and break the Labor Day opening that was set by 2007’s Halloween is amazing. Haloween’s opening weekend record was $30.6 million. Marvel’s juggernaut consistently dominates the box office every time. Candyman and Free Guy were both able to add some money this weekend. As you can see below the difference between the top movie and second place is substantial.
Weekend Top Three
3. Free Guy $8.7 million
2. Candyman $10.5 million
1. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings $83.5 million
Like I said last weekend the next big release window is September 17th. Copshop will be releasing in a large number of theaters. A Ghost in the Shell limited 4K release is also happening that weekend. Dear Evan Hanse is coming out on the 24th. After that, we start to get into the spooky Halloween season with Addams Family 2 releasing on October 1st.
