New IP From Bungie Will Be Led By Destiny Veteran

Bungie

Bungie

Bungie has been one of the premier developers of FPS games for a very long time. As the creators of Halo, and the now long-running FPS MMO lite Destiny franchise. Bungie has proved time and time again that they know how to create an incredible FPS experience. While there have been plenty of growing pains in the development of Destiny and Destiny 2, Bungie has always seemed to try and do the best they can for their community. While Destiny 2 players are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Witch Queen expansion, the mystery remains about the future of Bungie outside of the Destiny franchise.

Bungie Is The Expanding For The Future

While Bungie has been taking outside investments from company’s like NetEase to help fund development on a brand new IP. Very little information has been made public about the upcoming title. Other than it is reportedly called “Matter” if trademarks are to be believed and that it looks to be an expansive loot-focused RPG experience. This direction makes a lot of sense due to the company’s experience with blending the FPS and MMO lite genre with Destiny 2. Who could lead this project though? Especially as Bungie will continue to create new content for Destiny 2 in the future with new seasons and story content. Thanks to a Linkedin job listing we have an idea of who could be leading this new project.

Christopher Barrett who has been a part of Bungie since the early days of Halo could be the Game Director of the upcoming new IP. Barret’s Linkedin job listing states that he is the Game Director for Bungie’s upcoming unannounced IP. Barret brings a resume filled with experience across a variety of titles from Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo: Reach as well as Destiny and Destiny 2. There is no doubt he is qualified to lead the team on their next big journey.

“Creative Director with expertise in all aspects of video game production. Experience leading teams while working on numerous titles including Myth 2, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Halo: Reach, Destiny 1, and Destiny 2. Game Director on Bungie’s unannounced next IP. Experienced in game design, live service content, art direction, graphic design, UX, and 2D illustration.”

When Could We See This New Project?

While there is no concrete release date for information, as we don’t have an official announcement yet. Bungie did state that they wanted to release an all-new IP by 2025 at the latest. This means that possibly we could start to begin to see teasers or even information revealed about this upcoming title soon. However, with the pandemic still causing havoc for many developers, it is hard to tell whether or not this timeline is still realistic. However, it is hard to not get excited when a premier studio such as Bungie begins gearing up for a brand new game. Here is hoping we will learn more about this title later in 2022.
