Crossfire X Will Be Closing Down Its Servers This May

The past few weeks have been rough for GaaS games. From Marvel’s Avengers support being dropped by Crystal Dynamics to EA slashing multiple mobile titles. It certainly seems like developers and publishers are trimming the fat as we close in on year-end financial results in the coming months. Now another game has been revealed to be shut down in the coming months. The once hotly anticipated Crossfire X will be turning off its servers later this year.

Pulling The Plug On Crossfire X

In an official blog post, it was revealed that Crossfire X will be shutting down its servers on May 18th, 2023. Players will not be able to play the title after it shuts down, this includes the single-player campaign that was co-developed by Remedy. Players who had purchased the game within the past 14 days will be eligible for a refund. However, if you purchased this game outside of the past 14 days, you will not be eligible for a refund. Developers Smilegate Entertainment had this to say about the shutdown of Crossfire X.

“Coming to this decision was not easy, however, we can proudly say that our players have been amazingly active, passionate, and enthusiastic in working with us to create a game that would be fun and enjoyable for all. We want to thank each and every one of our players for playing Crossfire X and being a part of this journey with us.”

There were many challenges that faced Smilegate when Crossfire X originally launched. From a lack of content, and meaningful post-launch support as well as performance issues and bug galore. Crossfire X was not the massive FPS explosion many thought it might be. It remains one of our poorest-scored games of 2022 for many of the reasons listed above. Here is hoping that whatever Smilegate works on next is received better and isn’t filled with as many issues.
