Third Magic Mike Sinks The Titanic
This past weekend, moviegoers did not hit the theaters in large numbers. I thought we might still be in January with these numbers. A movie from 1997 was almost able to take that top spot from Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance Underwhelms
While we have one week until Phase 5 starts for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, theaters are still struggling. Magic Mike’s Last Dance grossed an underwhelming $8.2 million in its opening weekend. This movie was only released in 1,500 theaters. It doesn’t look like another 1000 theaters would have gotten this movie past $20 million. It’s a weird time to release a movie like this, it should have been released when it was warmer and people wanted to go to the movies. Especially bringing out large groups of viewers who watched this series before.
Last weekend Knock at the Cabin grossed over $14 million in its first weekend. Now that movie dropped down to fifth place grossing $5.5 million. Avatar: The Way of Water sat at number two this weekend. This movie only grossed $6.8 million as the majority of fans have already come and gone to see it. At this moment the domestic numbers sit at $646 million and $1.5 billion internationally. This gives the second Avatar film a worldwide total of $2.2 billion. Titanic was released this weekend, it was originally released in 1997. This film just took over the box office back then. Today this film shows up in 2023 as the third most-watched movie this weekend.
Weekend Top Three
3. Titanic 25th Anniversary $6.4 million
2. Avatar: The Way of Water $6.8 million
1. Magic Mike’s Last Dance $8.4 million
This coming weekend the Marvel juggernaut will likely continue to print money. Fans will finally see the big evil Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania starting Thursday night. Look for What About Love and Marlowe as both of these films are released in a large number of theaters. At this point, we should easily see between $50 – $60 million next weekend for the third Ant-Man movie. I’m just purely guessing based on the fact that so many new elements are being released in this film. I don’t see this movie as one of those Avengers money-making movies. I could be wrong and I won’t know until next weekend.
