GENESIS is set at the start of the Omnic Crisis. Society’s golden age of A.I. disappears within a blink as hell breaks loose. Consequently, Omnics begin showing signs of sentience. The mini-series stars the original members of team Overwatch including Ana Amari, Gabriel Reyes, Torbjorn, and more.

Additionally, the Overwatch mini-series teases an important Ominic who has gained sentience. The trailer ends with the individual at the Shambali Monastery. This monastery is home to a number of monks including Zenyatta in the present world’s present day. Subsequently, Genji studied under Zenyatta at Shambali as well.

Blizzard delivered numerous high-quality cinematics for the Overwatch franchise. The love for those stories has resulted in the developer’s renewed focus on the world’s story. However, GENESIS will be comparable to previous cinematics in terms of length. Additionally, it will be released in three parts.

The runtimes may disappoint some in the short term. Yet, this is a promising start. Strong reception to the debut of the Overwatch mini-series could lead to a fully fleshed-out series. Furthermore, this franchise always benefitted from its strong characters and world-building. Time will tell if GENESIS proves to be another stepping stone to cinematic success. Meanwhile, the Overwatch World Cup is finishing the last round of qualifiers this weekend. Check out the heated competition and the World Finals at Blizzcon later this year.
