Back at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) last year, we went hands-on with Dragon’s Dogma 2 on the PS5. You can read our full impression from the preview in Tokyo here. Since then, there has been some frames-per-second drama regarding how the game runs on consoles and PC. Ignoring all previews from TGS, a few outlets like PC Focus and IGN Japan, along with various form posters ran with a rumor that Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be locked at 30 frames per second. The entire situation has been based on a lie from an unreputable leaker.

The negative attention drove game director Hideaki Itsuno to put out a statement that said, “Dragon’s Dogma 2 will release with an uncapped framerate!” While this has done nothing to squash apprehensiveness around the game, we wanted to give our context. When we spoke with the developers in Tokyo, they were very skittish about how they said it, but they did say that they were targeting 60FPS on PS5. When I followed up on that, they would not commit to the game running at a locked 60FPS.

How Dragon’s Dogma 2 Ran For Us on PS5

As for how the game ran during our playtest, it seems to contradict the rumor entirely. Keep in mind, that the build we played will probably be a year old by the time Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches. Also, our demo was three separate 20-minute sessions. These were specific parts of the game hand-built by the development team. While our experience is anecdotal, it for sure was not 30FPS. Analyzing the direct capture from the PS5, the game ran at 60FPS with some inconsequential dips. All three 20-minute videos average around 59.50 FPS. We have uploaded a collection of screenshots so you can see yourself.

Wait To See

With all of that said, official guidance is likely coming for Dragon’s Dogma 2 regarding how it performs on various platforms and with what visual options there are. Typically publishers release this information the same week the game is released. At the same time, this whole thing is irrelevant to PC players as we now know the game is not capped at 30FPS.

Something to take into account is, that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has a very high level of detail, it is a large and dense open-world game. Plus there is a high level of action coming from a party of players. This is not just combat with weapons but, highly detailed visual spells. If it can hit 60FPS on consoles, it will be a work of pure magic itself. One thing is for sure, do not count on this being a 30FPS game on PS5. As for the resolution, that is another story entirely.
