Pokemon Battle Team Setup: Sunny Trick Room
It’s been a long while, but we are back. I am bringing you another Pokemon Doubles Battle Team. I am still searching for any unique teams out there. With Scarlet and Violet’s DLC being released, I decided to go with a team involving that. When it comes to this team, there are others out there with similar strategy. So for this month, we have a doubles battle team that I am dubbing Sunny Trick Room. So let’s get right into it!
Team Characteristics
We finally have the Teal Mask DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. With that being said that means the Ogerpon is finally legal in these games for ranked battles. We get access to the new Hearthflame Mask for thanks to Ogerpon. It proves to be very useful and fits in on hyper-offensive “Sun Teams.” Especially when they can output a lot of damage when utilizing Trick Room and Tailwind. Like many of the teams I have written about in the past, we have the female Indeedee and of course Flutter Mane. We got Torkoal to tank while being able to utilize his drought ability. Tornadus also has Sunny Day, so both Pokemon can change the battlefield for us.
The other part of the team is the Trick Room part. Trick Room reverses the turn order allowing slower Pokemon to act first. When a team is using this strategy they tend to have Pokemon with lower speed that can hit hard. I’m not the best Trick Room player and by means no pro. I will say having access to that in addition to a weather strategy is good. Weather strategies tend to be some of my favorites.
Ogerpon
The first Pokemon on the team and the one that brings it together is Ogerpon. This female Ogerpon is a Grass/Fire-type with the Mold Breaker ability. A Pokemon with Mold Breaker essentially ignores the ability of the target. For example, Earthquake could hurt targets with the levitate ability. She is holding a Hearthflame Mask that changes its form. It will increase the power of her moves by 20%. The best stats for Ogerpon are her Speed and Attack.
Wood Hammer, Ivy Cudgel, Knock Off, and Spiky Shield are the moves she knows. Wood Hammer is a move that causes the user recoil damage. Ivy Cudgel’s type changes based on the mask Ogerpon is wearing. It also has a high critical hit ratio. Knock Off gets rid of the target’s held item and does more damage if they had a held item. Spiky Shield protects the user from all effects of moves that target it during the turn it is used, including damage. If an attack is blocked it will deal damage back to whoever attacked it. Ogerpon is weal to Poison, Flying, and Rock-types.
Armarouge
Next up on the team is the Fire/Psychic-type Pokemon Armarouge. Armarouge is a female with the Flash Fire ability. If hit by a Fire-type move the Pokemon will absorb it and power up its own Fire-type moves. She is also holding the Life Orb which boosts her moves. But she will take damage in return when using damaging moves. This allows our Armarouge to be one of our good damage dealers. Her best abilities are her Special Attack and Hit Points.
Expanding Force, Heat Wave, Aura Sphere, and Trick Room are the moves she knows. Expanding Voice is a Psychic attacking move that usually has one target. If Psychic Terrain is active it’s boosted and can hit both the opposing Pokemon. Heat Wave hits both targets on the other teams and has a chance to inflict a burn. Aura Sphere bypasses accuracy checks to always hit and deals decent damage. Then we have one of the namesake moves of the team Trick Room. When used Pokemon with a Speed stat will attack first and faster ones last. Armarouge is weak to Water, Ground, Rock, Ghost, and Dark types.
Flutter Mane
The third Pokemon on the team is one you have seen a lot. The Ghost/Fairy-type Flutter Mane once again graces our team. Flutter Mane has the ability of Protosynthesis. Protosynthesis boosts its most proficient stat in harsh sunlight or if it is holding Booster Energy. Choice Specs is the item Flutter Mane is holding. Choice Specs boosts the holder’s Special Attack by 50% but only allows the use of the first move chosen. This tends to be the general Flutter Mane consensus that I see. The highest stats for Flutter Mane are Speed, Special Attack, and Special Defense.
Dazzling Gleam, Shadow Ball, Moonblast, and Protect are the moves Flutter Mane knows. Dazzling Gleam is a damage-dealing Fairy-type move. Shadow Ball is a damage-dealing move that has a 20% chance to reduce the target’s Special Defense. Moonblast is an attacking move that may lower the target’s Special Attack Stat. Of course, the Protect ability protects the user for a turn, but may fail if used in succession. Flutter Mane is weak to Ghost and Steel-type Pokemon.
Indeedee
Next on the team is the Psychic/Normal-type we have used before, Indeedee. We always go with a female Indeedee and she has the ability of Psychic Surge. When this Pokemon enters the battlefield, she will cause the terrain to become Psychic Terrain. This means Armarouge’s Expanding Force can work well with her ability. She is also holding a Rocky Helmet will damage whichever enemy makes contact with her. The best stats we have for her are Special Defense and Hit Points.
Indeedee knows Dazzling Gleam, Helping Hand, Follow Me, and Protect. Dazzling Gleam is a good attacking move and our only attacking move to boot. Helping Hand is a support move that assists an ally by boosting the power of that ally’s attack. Follow Me is a good support move that makes all opposing Pokemon focus on the user. Protect as we know makes the user invulnerable to most things for a turn, but can fail if used in succession. In every team I’ve used her on Indeedee has always proven to be a supportive blessing for the teams. She is weak to Bug and Dark-type Pokemon.
Torkoal
Next up is the tank of the team. I am talking about the Fire-type Pokemon Torkoal. Torkoal is a male with the Drought ability. This means it turns the sunlight harsh whenever Torkoal enters the battlefield. He is also holding the Choice Specs which boosts Special Attack, but only allows the use of one move. You might think that’s a bad thing, but it really isn’t. The best stats for Torkoal are Hit Points, Defense, and Special Attack.
Eruption, Heat Wave, Flamethrower, and Earth Power are the moves the Torkoal knows. Eruption deals damage based on how high his Hit Points are. So the higher Torkoal’s Hit Points are the more damage he does. Heat Wave hits both targets on the other teams and has a chance to inflict a burn. Flamethrower deals damage and has a chance to inflict a burn. Earth Power Earth inflicts damage and has a 10% chance of lowering the target’s Special Defense. Torkoal is weak to Water, Ground, and Rock-type Pokemon.
Tornadus
The last Pokemon on the team is the Flying-type, Tornadus. This Tornadus is male and has the Prankster ability. The Prankster ability gives priority to the user’s status moves. Tornadus is holding the Covert Cloak. Covert Cloak protects the holder from the additional effects of other Pokemon’s damaging moves. He is going to be vital for setting up Tailwind and Sunny Day in some scenarios. Our best stats for him are his Speed and Special Attack.
Bleakwind Storm, Tailwind, Taunt, and Sunny Day are the moves that he knows. Bleakwind Storm is a damage-dealing move and has the chance to leave the target with Frostbite. Tailwind doubles the Speed stat of the user and all other Pokémon in the user’s party for three turns. Taunt makes the afflicted Pokemon unable to use status moves. Sunny Day is similar to the Drought ability in a way that changes the battlefield to Sunny and boosts Fire-type moves. Tornadus is weak against Electric, Ice, and Rock-types.
Wrap-Up
Overall this doubles battle Pokemon team was fun to run with. However, it was one of my worst performances unfortunately with 5 wins out of 10 matches. That’s not to say this is a bad team at all, but I was rusty. I also need more practice with Trick Room teams and making correct choices of Pokemon when swapping, choosing starters, etc… Weather-style teams are some of my favorites and this one was a lot of fun. Stay tuned as I’ll bring more battle teams in the future of course.
