Teamfight Tactics Patch 14.8 Nerfs 3-Cost Reroll, Buffs 4-Costs
Patch 14.8 of Teamfight Tactics is now live. There is a lot happening in this patch, just like with patch 14.7. The biggest change is a nerf to three-cost reroll comps. These comps are now harder to hit, as well as less powerful. Four-cost champions are more durable as well, furthering the shift away from three-cost reroll. In addition, the Storyweaver trait is shifting power from Kayle to the champions themselves. Finally, the way player damage is calculated is adjusted. These are some of the biggest changes brought by patch 14.8 of Teamfight Tactics.
Three-Cost Reroll Nerfs
There are several major nerfs to three-cost reroll comps on patch 14.8. First, players are now less likely to find three-cost champions at level seven. Level seven is the optimal time to roll for three-cost champions. That remains the case on patch 14.8. However, the odds of finding a three-cost at level seven are now 36%, down from 40%. This is only further magnified with each roll the player takes.
In addition, both Yone and Volibear are weaker on patch 14.8. Both champions are major parts of their respective reroll comps. Yone now has less attack speed (AS) and Volibear’s ability takes longer to cast. This should help reduce the strength of their respective comps.
Finally, Titan’s Resolve now grants one ability power (AP) per stack instead of two. Both Yone and Volibear liked to run two Titan’s Resolves.
Thus, three-cost reroll comps have taken a major hit. It is harder to hit three-star three-cost champions at level seven. Two of the main champions are now weaker, as are the items they prefer. This could have massive implications for the meta moving forward.
Four-Cost Champion Durability Buff
On patch 14.8, all four-cost champions are now more durable. Every four-cost champion now has more hit points (HP). The exact number varies by champion, but most champions have 200 additional HP.
Mortdog said in his patch rundown that there was too big of a difference between three-star three-cost champions and two-star four-cost champions. This change should help narrow that gap a little bit.
This helps shift the meta away from three-cost reroll comps being supreme. Four-cost champions will now survive against three-star three-cost champions a bit longer. Hopefully this also makes them more desirable for players to play as well.
Storyweaver Power Rebalance
Another major change on patch 14.8 of Teamfight Tactics is a power shift for the Storyweaver trait. According to Mortdog, three Storyweaver is still too strong. As a result, three Storyweaver’s Kayle is now weaker. However, the early Storyweaver champions themselves are fairly weak.
Thus, Garen, Riven, and Zyra are all stronger on patch 14.8. Garen’s ability’s shield is now stronger, as is Riven’s ability’s heal. In addition, Riven gains some attack damage (AD). Zyra, meanwhile, sees her ability’s damage increase. Her plants also gain increased missile speed.
Hopefully these changes help reign in the trait while allowing it to still feel good to play early on.
Player Damage Calculation Changes
One final change worth noting is an adjustment to player damage. When a player loses a round, they take damage based on two things. First, damage is done according to what stage the game is in. Second, damage is done based on how many enemy champions are left standing.
Prior to patch 14.8, this damage was not intuitive to calculate manually. Players would take two damage from each of up to three surviving champions. Any surviving champion past the third would only do one damage.
Patch 14.8 simplifies this, with each surviving champion dealing one damage, period. To compensate, the damage done during each stage is increased by two. Hopefully players have less difficulty understanding the damage they receive from a lost round.
Summary
Patch 14.8 of Teamfight Tactics has the chance to really shake up the meta. Three-cost reroll is now weaker, and all of the four-cost champions are stronger. This should enable more late game comps centered around four-cost champions. Storyweaver is weaker as a three piece, so other openers should be more viable. It is hard to say what if any changes the player damage adjustment will have on the meta. It should, however, make things easier to follow for players.
