As one of the industry’s very first shooters, Doom is a legend. The franchise has been on almost every platform and the most recent installments pushed the genre forward.
Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal are some of the greatest shooters of the past generation. The games pushed visual presentation and performance on a console. In addition, they flew in the face of titles like Call of Duty, offering massive levels to explore with little hand-holding.
Initially rumored during FTC trials, it’s time we all face some DOOM once more.
Doom: The Dark Ages Report
Insider Gaming has the initial report, stating the following on this upcoming title;
Insider Gaming understands that the next game in the DOOM franchise is set to be revealed during this year’s Xbox Games Showcase on June 9. The game, which has been under the codename/placeholder title ‘Year Zero’ is understood to have the final name ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’ and has been in development for at least four years.
Tom Henderson also speculates on the period and/or era the title would take place in;
Last year, I heard of early details of the next entry into the DOOM franchise, which was described to me as a ‘medieval inspired doom world’. While that doesn’t necessarily give much information to go on, ‘year zero’, ‘the dark ages’, and ‘medieval inspired’ starts to paint a vivid picture of where the series could be going next. Perhaps we’ll be taking more of an early look at the Doomslayer’s life during the medieval times? A prequel of sorts?
Multiplatform Nature
Not surprising to anyone at this point, Xbox’s multiplatform push continues with Doom: The Dark Ages if this report is correct. Covered by Insider Gaming, they report that the title will be released day-and-date on both Xbox Series platforms and PlayStation 5.
Nate the Hate said that the game will be multiplatform. While specifically mentions PS5 as another platform for the game, he doesn’t mention last-gen Xbox One or PlayStation 4.
Closing Thoughts
I initially was expecting ID Software to move on to another franchise following Doom Eternal. After that game’s release, they partnered with Machine Games and other developers on high-quality Quake remasters.
So speculation for many was that Quake would be the next series ID would tackle. But you can’t say no to more Doom.
It’s a series any gamer could pick up and enjoy on some level. And with the push forward for first-person shooters the latest Doom titles offered, can’t wait to see what they show us all during the Xbox Games Showcase.
