Despite a late announcement, Sony is kicking off the 2024 summer showcase season with its State of Play. The showcase will unveil what PlayStation’s roadmap will be for the next 12 months. Check out the round-up of all the exciting new announcements from the Sony State of Play below. Including the announcement of Dynasty Warriors: Origins from Koei Tecmo!
Dynasty Warriors: Origins Reveal Trailer
Koei Tecmo has said the following on this new installment;
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is being developed by the fantastic team at Omega Force, a team that is poised for a fresh start with this game (complete with new logo), and we’re out to prove with Origins that we are not only going back to our hack and slash roots with the type of action our fans crave, but we are here to redefine expectations! I am certain that in this game, we will deliver a most excellent experience that we were not able to accomplish in the series until now, carving out a new history for both Dynasty Warriors and Omega Force!
In many respects, this project is a ‘refresh’ for the series. It is also the first installment on the PlayStation 5 and Series X/S platforms, being a major technological shift forward.
New Tech
As stated in the PlayStation Blog post and reflected in the trailer, new technology is being used to create larger battlefields;
To achieve this, we’re making the most of the PS5 hardware specs, creating an all-new Warriors-like battlefield where you’re challenged by massive armies as far as the eye can see! With the overwhelming number and scale of enemy armies pushing towards you, you’ll have to act fast and with force if you want to survive. In addition to your own striking power, you’ll need to coordinate with allied armies and enjoy the tactical aspects of gameplay in order to take out the hoard of enemies in our most tension-filled fights to date.
This can be seen in the trailer, showing the largest number of characters in the series. And with the stronger CPU in these new consoles, the foes you fight could have smarter AI.
Better AI
This is a major improvement, considering prior installments and various games using the ‘Warriors’ template like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and Fire Emblem: Three Hopes used weak CPUs. This meant that your foes were nothing more than punching bags you slashed your way through.
With stronger hardware, not only will you be fighting hundreds of warriors with allies of your own. But battles could be more dynamic.
Original Main Character in Dynasty Warriors: Origins
Prior games used historical characters, but Dynasty Warriors: Origins introduces an original character as the protagonist.
But that’s not all, as for the first time in Dynasty Warriors franchise history, we will depict the chaos of the Three Kingdoms from the eyes of a ‘nameless hero’. Play through the historical tale of war through the eyes of our new protagonist, showcasing the vast land of China and its timeless soldiers and generals like never before!
This potentially gives the writing team more freedom, while also letting the player more organically ‘insert’ themselves into the battle.
Closing Thoughts
While I have not played a proper Dynasty Warrior game before, I have experienced the spin-off games using its formula. I loved the feeling of slashing my way through waves of monsters in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
Seeing this formula also be utilized to create a proper action/RPG adventure with Persona 5 Strikers was enjoyable as well. So, seeing this series evolve and use this generation’s hardware to better realize the vision of large battles is exciting.
Imagine how large the battles could get on a PlayStation 5. And that combined with a more personal narrative and potentially a refined AI system? There is a lot of potential in this new Dynasty Warriors.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is currently slated for 2025 on PlayStation 5.
