Electronic Arts is infamous for its sports efforts, with Madden and FIFA/Football Club, frequently hitting the top sales charts. But one sub-sector of sports has long been requested since NCAA Football 2014: College football.

Hearing the demand many years later, EA Sports announces College Football 2025.

Trailer and General Information

EA said the following on this return to video game college football via a press release on their official website;

“EA SPORTS College Football is BACK! We’ve felt the passion and anticipation of college football fans every step of the way since we first announced this game, and we’re ecstatic to finally be able to show everyone what we’ve been building,” said Daryl Holt, SVP and Group GM, EA SPORTS. “College Football 25 is built with authenticity at its core, inspired by experiences our fans have loved from our games, and fully evolved to reflect modern college football – all of which will immerse them in the sights, sounds, and true-to-life gameplay of the sport they love.”

Most interestingly of all, is the fact this release is exclusive to this current generation of consoles, unlike the Madden franchise. Being current generation only is a big deal, since the rest of the EA Sports lineup is on multiple platforms.

Gameplay Systems in College Football 25

Using updated systems, EA states in a press release the following gameplay features:

  • Wear & Tear System: As the hits add up, players wear down with the Wear & Tear System. Manage your players’ health, limit fatigue, assess risk of injury, and avoid on-field mistakes by using strategic substitutions to ensure your players are at their best when it counts the most.
  • Pre-Snap Recognition: Pre-Snap Recognition makes the decision behind every snap matter more. Do you trust in your high-skill seniors, or take a risk with your untested freshman? Read the game, then read your players to make the right decision when the game is on the line.
  • Homefield Advantage: Game-altering homefield advantages rattle your rivals in college football’s toughest places to play. Test your squad’s road game composure and confidence levels as you play through distractions like screen shaking, missing pre-play icons, and moving play art.

I’m not going to pretend to know what most of this means, but it sounds like the role-playing elements commonly seen in the campaign modes in various EA and 2K sports titles are present here. In addition, the updated graphics engine will add a sense of immersion to the experience.

It is one thing to watch the sport but another to play the game. So, seeing EA use these modern consoles to make the experience as authentic as possible is fantastic for fans of the genre.

Other Modes/Features

The full press release, which can be found here, details other ways they are being authentic to college football. But the number of modes for the ‘campaign’ so to speak, looks vast.

This includes a Dynasty Mode, Road to Glory, Road to the College Football Playoff, and even a variation of the Ultimate Team mode seen in other EA Sports titles. For anyone who loves college football, it seems you will be playing for a while.

Regarding pricing, EA mentioned you could buy the standard mode or deluxe edition. Or you could get a double pack for $149.99 having the Deluxe Editions of Madden 25 and College Football 25.

Closing Thoughts

I’m sure you are looking at the author of this article and are raising an eyebrow.

Does Lord Sonic like football? I’m firmly not a sports person at all. The closest sport I would play is basketball bi-daily at my local park. But sports are so important to the gaming space and are sadly underrepresented.

Specifically, it’s important to highlight College Football 25 because it’s important for the sports community. The last title in this series was in 2014, released on the PS3 and Xbox 360. That was two generations ago.

Seeing EA Sports revive this sub-series of its infamous Madden series is only a good thing and hopefully inspires other sports genres to get another chance. A modern-day Fight Night or SSX would be very much appreciated.
