PlayStation VR Expands – PS VR2 Getting PC Support August 7th

16 Views

Much has been said about PlayStation’s latest effort in the VR space. But one common complaint is the lack of support for PC titles. With PlayStation going further in the PC space as of late, one had to ask about VR. Would Sony let their latest VR headset be compatible with PC titles? Potentially VR games of their own?

The answer to that is largely, a resounding yes.

PS VR2 Receiving PC Support

Sony officially made the following statement on June 3rd regarding PS VR2 support on PC;

When PlayStation VR2 launched last year, we were thrilled to introduce PS5 players to a new generation of VR games with innovative gameplay and immersive sensory features. Inspired by our passion to bring gamers even more content options, we’ve been working to enable access to additional games on PC, complementing the diverse PS VR2 games lineup available on PS5. Today, we’re happy to share that we’ll be rolling out this support on August 7.

The official blog post also breaks down the hardware needed to utilize the PS VR2 Adaptor, with said adaptor costing $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99 depending on the region.

Features Missing for PS VR2 on PC

Despite this great move in giving additional value to PS VR2, there is a caveat. While some features will be supported, many features that define the headset will not be usable out of the box.

…so you’ll notice that some key features, like HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (other than rumble), are not available when playing on PC.

That being said, specific features like the 4K OLED display can be utilized.

Closing Thoughts on PS VR

PS VR2 by all accounts, is not the success PlayStation was hoping for. It hasn’t sold nearly as well when compared to the original PS VR and the platform has less first-party support than even other ‘failures’ like the PS Vita and PS Move Controller.

The hardware in the PS VR2 unit is genuinely great so it will complement PC platforms. It is a shame not all of the headsets’ features are usable when connected to a PC.

Hopefully, in the future, Sony could figure out how to properly implement them on PC. And if they can’t, the community could take matters into their own hands as well.
