The Suikoden series is based on these magical items called the 27 True Runes. Wars have been fought over these and many people have died in pursuit of these powerful magical items. There are also some “unique” runes as well as “common” runes, so let’s talk about My Top 5 Favorite Suikoden Runes.

5. True Wind Rune

When it comes to the True Wind Rune in Suikoden it makes the list for multiple reasons. My 2nd favorite character Luc is the one who bears this rune. A big bonus for anyone who wants to hit multiple enemies most of the True Wind Rune “spells” hit all enemies. The one spell known as Funeral Wind hits one enemy, but has a chance for Instant Death. So I would say that’s a good trade-off. The True Rune is heavily featured in the third game playing a big role in the overall plot as well.

4. Flowing Rune

Next up on the list is a more powerful version of the common Water rune called the Flowing Rune. This rune largely focuses on healing and protection. Normally, I’m not known for playing cautiously or defensively, just ask people who play Demeo with me. However, In the Suikoden series runes like these are abundantly useful. Being able to heal in bad situations or even cure all negative status effects which can happen a lot helps. Not only that, but it is one of the few runes that can revive allies as well.

3. Mother Earth Rune

Number 3 on my list of Top 5 Favorite Suikoden Runes is the Mother Earth Rune. This is for a few different reasons. The first reason is it is my mom’s favorite rune and she’s the one that introduced me to the game and series. I couldn’t see a playthrough where she wasn’t making sure to be using this rune. It also focuses largely on defense with a massive attack spell called earthquake.

Earthquake deals decent damage and hits all enemies. Depending on which game in the series you’re using it you can also raise magic and physical defense, cure all negative effects, and even repel all magic. Those are just a few things from this cool rune.

2. Resurrection Rune

Number 2 on my Top 5 Favorite Suikoden Rune list is one that grew on me as I got older. Always useful against the undead in the game this rune has some cool animations which I’ve grown to enjoy. It has 2 attacks one for a single target and another that hits all enemies. It also is another rune that has the spell “Yell” to revive an ally. Then lastly it has a spell that can heal you and your allies. Very useful rune on the list that has great animations.

1. Blue/Pale Gate Rune

The number 1 rune on my list that it would take a miracle to change my mind about is the Blue/Pale Gate Rune. Originally called Blue Gate it became Pale Gate in later Suikoden installments. This rune has my favorite animation of any rune I have used. In the earlier games the spell “Pale Palace” summons a pirate ship that shoots cannon balls at the enemies. I’ve always been a fan of pirates, so ever since I was a kid I thought that was awesome.

However, one thing of note when it comes to this rune some of its spells are based on elemental affinities. This rune’s most powerful spell does damage your allies as well as your enemies, so its something to keep in mind. So only some of the strongest magic users are able to wield this rune. Especially, since you can only equip 3 runes and this one requires a head slot.

Final Thoughts

I will say as we wrap this up the Blue/Pale Gate Rune will probably never leave this list. I will say the ones higher on the list can change because there are just so many different runes. Other honorable mentions are Rune of Punishment, Bright Shield, True Fire, Soul Eater, Shield, and the Kindness Rune. There are plenty of great ones and what I enjoy changes all the time. I would like to hear what some of your favorite runes are. Are there any on this list?
