Steel Thy Concert – Shovel Knight Live Announced for 2025
Video Game music has continued receiving mainstream love over the years, with iconic Distant Worlds concerts for the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises kicking the initiative off. However a recent event, SEGA’s Sonic Symphony, a blending of rock bands and a live orchestra, seemingly inspired an exciting upcoming event for 2025.
Yacht Club Games revealed that their legendary indie hit Shovel Knight is receiving a live concert, dubbed Steel Thy Concert in 2025 across New York City and Los Angeles.
Steel Thy Shovel – Shovel Knight Live Announcement
Yacht Club Games has stated the following regarding this exciting event via its official website;
Set forth on a sonorous sojourn with Shovel Knight Live: Steel Thy Concert! An epic celebration of a decade of digging, featuring the most beloved tunes from the legendary Shovel Knight series. Our live orchestral and rock ensemble will take you on an adventure through the game’s melodies and themes, with vibrant arrangements by the Grammy award winning artist Charlie Rosen and Shovel Knight’s irrepressible composer Jake Kaufman, with HD gameplay footage shown on screen. Do not miss this momentous occasion – the first-ever official Shovel Knight concert. Join us for a two-show spectacular, where every note strikes true to the spirit of Shovelry!
As they described, it will meld orchestral melodies with an amazing rock band, not unlike the magic present at the Sonic Symphony. The teaser trailer showed off one of the likely tracks being played, ‘Strike the Earth (Planes of Passage)’, but I expect other tracks from the series to be played as well.
Getting the Right Shovel – Ticket Information
Tickets are on sale for both the New York City at Town Hall and Los Angeles’ The Fonda Theatre shows. Pricing for standard tickets, as of this writing, hovers around $50-70. In addition, you could get a VIP upgrade as well. This will let you talk with the team behind the game and even the original composer after the show.
Information can be found on the website and expect an impressions piece about the event from your truly after the New York City show in February.
Future of Video Game Concerts
Between this, SEGA’s massive success with the Sonic Symphony, and Sony’s recent announcement for a PlayStation concert, video game music is being treated more seriously.
But with Steel Thy Shovel, this is the first time an indie company is holding a show like this. With other amazing indie projects with similarly amazing scores, like Galaxy Trail’s Freedom Planet series and 2024’s Beserk Boy from Beserk Boy Games, I wonder what this means for titles like those.
Could indie companies team up and hold shows celebrating their music? Or could a bigger publisher, like Capcom or Ubisoft, make shows celebrating their franchises?
Closing Thoughts
I love video game music, frequently listening to it during my walks or travels daily. Seeing a smaller company attempting the magic publishers like SEGA and Square Enix experimented with in recent years, has me excited.
Shovel Knight has one of the best soundtracks in the indie space and seeing that get honored like this is a sight to behold. Will you be going to one of the shows? Let us know in the comments below!
