New AAA Rayman Game in Development at Ubisoft Milan

After years of waiting, fans of the iconic limbless hero can rejoice: a new AAA Rayman game is officially in development at Ubisoft Milan. The studio, previously known for its work on the Mario + Rabbids series, is currently seeking a talented 3D Gameplay Animator to join the production of this highly anticipated title for the Rayman brand, as revealed through a recent job listing.

Rayman: Back in Action

Rayman Legends

Rayman hasn’t seen a standalone title since the Rabbids made their chaotic debut on the Wii in 2006 with Rayman Raving Rabbids. While the Rabbids went on to become a franchise of their own, Rayman took a backseat, with his most recent appearances being limited to spin-offs and guest roles.

The 2023 Rayman DLC for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope was a delightful return for the character, showcasing his charm alongside Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Mario in a whimsical adventure. However, it also underscored the need for the Ubisoft icon to reclaim the spotlight with a dedicated game that gives him the respect he deserves.

Another Team-up With the Big N?

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope Rayman DLC

Given Nintendo’s close relationship with Ubisoft and the Rayman brand, I have some theories about the game’s platform. In 2013, Rayman Legends was initially planned as a Wii U exclusive before becoming multiplatform, and history might repeat itself. With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, it wouldn’t be surprising if this new Rayman title launches as a timed exclusive for Nintendo’s next console, capitalizing on the synergy between the two companies.

What To Expect From A Modern Rayman?

The franchise has a rich history of awesome platforming, from the 2D mastery of Rayman Origins to the expansive hubs of Rayman 2 and 3. What I would like from a modern take is an open-world or hub-based adventure, emphasizing exploration and expressive platforming in the vein of Super Mario Odyssey. Imagine Rayman gliding through colorful, interconnected worlds, platforming through 2D and 3D sections, and battling quirky enemies with new and returning power-ups. With Ubisoft‘s Anvil Engine, it could be a gorgeous return to form for the character.

Final Thoughts

As Ubisoft Milan ramps up development, the future looks bright for Rayman. This new title could be the triumphant return the franchise needs, blending nostalgia with fresh ideas to reintroduce the hero to a new generation of players. I can’t wait to see the reimagining of this beloved character and hope we get a glimpse at Ubisoft Forward 2025.
