After years of waiting for more information, fans finally have a better idea of when Sora’s next adventure will begin. During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026, Square Enix and Disney & Pixar Games announced that Kingdom Hearts IV will release in late 2027. The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer shown during the Disney Entertainment Showcase. Thus giving fans another look at Sora’s upcoming adventure while revealing a new world inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Coco.

Kingdom Hearts IV Heads to the World of Coco
One of the biggest reveals from the new trailer was the addition of a vibrant world inspired by Coco. The Pixar film joins the growing collection of Disney and Pixar properties that have been transformed into explorable worlds throughout the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
Kingdom Hearts IV once again follows Sora as he finds himself in the mysterious city of Quadratum. Heartless are causing havoc throughout the city, while Sora’s journey will eventually take him to multiple worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar. Along the way, Sora will encounter new characters and awaken new powers as the next chapter of the long-running story unfolds.
Mickey, Donald, and Goofy Will Be Playable
The new D23 trailer also confirmed the return of several familiar faces, including Donald Duck and Goofy. However, this time they won’t simply be accompanying Sora on another adventure.
Players will be able to take control of some returning favorite. They will get their hands on Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. While the trio searches for information about Sora’s whereabouts. The reveal suggests Kingdom Hearts IV will expand its playable cast beyond Sora during at least portions of the story.
The extended trailer was revealed as part of the deep dive into KINGDOM HEARTS panel at D23. Which celebrated 25 years of the franchise and its history of bringing together Disney, Pixar, and Square Enix characters and worlds.
A Kingdom Hearts Anime Is Also in Development
Kingdom Hearts IV wasn’t the only announcement for the franchise during D23. An original Kingdom Hearts anime series, currently operating under a working title, is also in development for Disney Channel and Disney+.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix. Additional details about the series, including its story and release window, have not yet been announced.
Sora Returns in Late 2027
Kingdom Hearts fans still have a wait ahead of them. Luckily, the latest D23 showcase provided the clearest picture yet of what’s coming next. Between the newly revealed Coco world, playable Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, and Sora’s continuing journey through Quadratum, Kingdom Hearts IV is beginning to take shape.
Kingdom Hearts IV will release in late 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game is available to wishlist now. For more information you can go here.
