Square Enix has finally given us a release date for Final Fantasy VII Revelation. The third and final game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy launches April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Square Enix made the announcement during PlayStation’s State of Play, where it also showed a new release date trailer and an extensive gameplay deep dive.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Looks Really Good
For me, this was probably the biggest announcement from the show. And after watching both videos, they did what they were supposed to do. They made me want to play this game.
Everything on the table here: I still haven’t played Final Fantasy VII Remake or Rebirth. I own both games on multiple platforms, so I don’t exactly have a good excuse.
Still, watching Revelation got me pretty excited about finally jumping in. The game looks gorgeous, but the combat is what really caught my attention.
Square Enix is expanding its hybrid combat system, featuring playable party members Cid and Vincent, alongside a new FITS system. It gives characters specialized roles including Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner.
Players can change their controlled character and party while exploring. There’s a new grappling gun, the Highwind opens up exploration across the planet, and your party choices for certain quests can affect how some scenarios play out.
There looks like there’s going to be a lot to learn here, but the combat also looks like it would be fun to learn and eventually master.
Maybe I Don’t Have to Play 200 Hours First
The gameplay deep dive did something I wasn’t expecting. It made me feel like I could jump into Revelation and understand enough of what’s happening to get going.
I still want to play the first two games, but that’s different from thinking I have to play them first.
Square Enix is making catching up easier, too. Remake Intergrade and Rebirth now have Streamlined Progression options including unlimited HP and MP, a full ATB gauge, and easier weapon ability acquisition.
Something else stood out to me. Nintendo Switch 2 is right there alongside PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. We’re starting to see more major multiplatform releases include Nintendo’s hardware from the beginning instead of treating it as something separate.
I wasn’t sure how excited I was for Final Fantasy VII Revelation when I started watching. Now I want to play the first two games, and I’m looking forward to April.
So, yeah. The videos did their job.
