Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over 1 million copies worldwide on its first day, according to Capcom. The launch also pushed total Onimusha series sales past 10 million. It’s the franchise’s first new entry in over 20 years.
What Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a swordplay action game starring Miyamoto Musashi and set in Edo-era Kyoto. The series follows warriors wielding supernatural Oni powers against monsters bent on world domination.
The game launched September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Capcom credits its prelaunch demos and hands-on events with helping introduce the game to more players.
Why I’m Looking at the Xbox Physical Version
I have all of the earlier Onimusha games sitting in my backlog. I picked them up when Way of the Sword started appearing at showcases, and I’ve been meaning to return to them. My friends are excited about the action-based gameplay, which is something we all enjoy. That’s made me even more interested.
I’m seriously considering the Xbox physical version because I’m a physical-first person. The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, and reports indicate that its disc works with Xbox’s disc-to-digital program. For players with access to the Insider test, that could mean keeping the disc and also playing on console and PC.
I’ve built much of my physical collection on PlayStation. But as a physical-first person, Sony’s January 2028 cutoff for new disc releases is steering me to Xbox. I’ll still consider PlayStation exclusives, but keeping an Xbox disc while also playing on PC? That’s kind of awesome, and I’m here for that.
