Why Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword Releasing Ahead of Schedule?
Capcom is serving up Onimusha: Way of the Sword earlier than expected. The game now launches September 4, 2026, and honestly, that’s kind of interesting.
Usually, when we hear about release date changes, it’s bad news. A delay. A vague “we need more time to polish the game.” A sad little calendar shuffle. But this time, Capcom is doing the opposite. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is coming earlier across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
And yeah, the obvious question is sitting right there in the room, holding a rocket launcher and wearing a Rockstar logo. lol
Capcom Might Be Giving Onimusha Some Room to Breathe

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first new main entry in the series in 20 years. That’s a long time. Long enough that some players are going to treat this like a big comeback, while others are going to ask, “wait, what’s Onimusha?”
So yeah, the date isn’t random.
The game follows Miyamoto Musashi, who’s armed with the Oni Gauntlet and fighting demons across Edo-period Kyoto. It’s samurai, monsters, dark fantasy Japan, and Capcom action. That’s good. We don’t need much more than that.
The GTA 6 Elephant in the Room
Let’s not pretend the back half of 2026 doesn’t have one giant problem for everybody else: Grand Theft Auto VI. And if you’re Capcom, you’re not trying to bring Onimusha back after 20 years just to have it get buried under GTA 6 two months later.
That part.
Moving Onimusha: Way of the Sword to September 4 feels smart. It gives Capcom breathing room before the holiday season turns into the GTA 6 show. That doesn’t mean Onimusha is scared. It means Capcom can read a game release calendar.
And honestly, good. Let Onimusha cook in September. Let people play the demo now, talk about the combat, remember the series, and see if this comeback has legs before the whole industry gets pulled into Rockstar’s orbit.
Demo and Pre-Orders Are Live
A demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword is out now on PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Players with demo save data will get a Kubi Akari charm bonus when the full game launches.
Pre-orders are also live now, with Early Adopter Bonuses for the Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe editions if players jump in before September 24.
So yeah, moving up the release date isn’t just a nice surprise. It might be Capcom making sure Onimusha gets its own moment before the rest of 2026 gets very loud. It’s a smart move.
