No, it’s not because Square Enix doesn’t love you. It is actually due to an issue that people who play online service games should be familiar with. All stemming from the critically acclaimed expansion “Endwalker” for Final Fantasy 14.
What’s going on with Final Fantasy 14?
To put it simply, Final Fantasy 14 is currently experiencing server problems. As the game is currently suffering from a staggering amount of players wanting to play the finale of the current story in it. While this is a moment many see as brag-worthy, others are worried their precious subscription time is being wasted and want to play it. This is understandable, but Square Enix has shared an update about the situation in a recent post on their website.
We apologize for the ongoing congestion that has been occurring since Early Access and the official launch of Endwalker. It’s been nearly two weeks since the start of Early Access and players are still experiencing substantial congestion when logging into the game.
The steps they are taking to ensure current owners can play are as followed:
- Physical and Digital versions of Final Fantasy 14 are currently not available to purchase. As well as the free trial version is unavailable for new players trying to register for it. This is an attempt to keep the servers from swelling up more than they currently are.
- Current players will have received 7 days of free game times as compensation. With 14 days being added to their accounts soon.
“But what if I’m a new player and don’t currently have the expansions?” You should be fine, as expansions and Collector’s Editions upgrades are still available to all current players as of December 15th. Full details of the situation can be found here. This is a pretty common problem for online games, and due to shortages of hardware, Square cannot simply just “add more servers”.
