Spleen is an upcoming 2D sidescroller action game and life simulator hybrid. This game is to be the debut title for indie studio Pamplemousse Games. Brought to life by its Kickstarter years ago, Spleen aims to have a wonderfully colorful and unique art style. During the day, you will play as “Johann” and experience his normal day-to-day life. While at night in his dream you will experience hack-and-slash-styled combat from a sidescrolling perspective.

Current Details on Spleen

The game has themes of childhood nostalgia and merges moments from the real world into the dream world. The real world is filled with more darker colors to represent the depressing feel of day-to-day life. Then swaps to the bright, and cheery dream world where you will uncover stuff hidden in Johanns subconscious. Fighting enemies that have impressive variety and visually distinct looks from one another. With a fast and fluid combat system with wall bouncing and aerial combos to take them down.

The premise of Spleen reminds me a lot of Dreamscaper from last year in the best way possible. The combat styles are obviously different between the two and how they both approach the cycle from the real world to the dream world is definitely different. But the overall premise is bound to be just as captivating as Dreamscaper was while leaning into nostalgia to nail some of its heavier moments in the overall narrative.

Spleen looks like an exciting title you should not miss out on. There is always room for heavy-hitting indies in the modern cycle of gaming. Especially with an excellent presentation like this.

There is no concrete release window yet and no platforms aside from Steam confirmed for the title. But if you’d like to support them and stay up to date, they have a discord channel linked in their Kickstarter page. As well as a YouTube channel you can find here.
