Starring Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), The Last of Us is a live-action adaptation of the much-beloved video game series developed by Naughty Dog. Yet, the show has a massive reach even with a casual audience unfamiliar with the games.

It debuted with a domestic viewership of over 22 million, and episode two saw even more exponential growth in viewers. This should come as no surprise. HBO’s adaptation enhances the post-apocalyptic formula with tragic heroes in an even more tragic world.

With its success, a second season seemed inevitable. Bella Ramsey even hinted a season two was probable with the overwhelming reception to the show. Finally, Neil Druckmann (executive producer and co-president of Naughty Dog) shared a season two announcement from HBO. Neil’s word choice seemingly confirms it will follow the plot of the sequel game, The Last of Us: Part Two. Additionally, Laura Bailey shared her excitement as well on Twitter. Laura is a critically acclaimed voice actor who starred alongside Ashley Johnson in the video game sequel.

Season one has stayed very faithful to the original game. It has proven to be one of the best video game adaptations of all time so far. The show airs weekly on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Readers can catch it on HBO Max. If this continues, I predict season two will topple Game of Thrones “Red Wedding” for the most shocking plot twist on television. Time will certainly tell.
