Summer promises to be an amazing time for gamers this year. Many amazing titles like Tears of the Kingdom and Final Fantasy XVI will keep people occupied for hundreds of hours. However, developers and major studios still have new announcements to keep us coming back for more. This week, Bungie took to the stage during the PlayStation showcase. They revealed their previously kept secret of Marathon along with a surprise return of the beloved character, Cayde-6.

The Final Shape

Bungie now lives under the umbrella of PlayStation. This new change feels more concrete with their appearance at the showcase and the current crossover of PlayStation icon sets inside Destiny 2. The Final Shape is the finale of the “Light and Darkness” saga for the Destiny franchise. Therefore, it was no surprise Bungie teased something on the topic at the PlayStation Showcase. However, no one could have predicted the return of Cayde-6.

The trailer focuses on Ikora Rey and Cayde-6 around a campfire. The camera eventually shows the pair seemingly inside the Traveler. How they got there is currently unknown.

His (Not) Final Death

Cayde-6 was an EXO guardian who led the Hunters inside the world of Destiny until his death during the events of the Forsaken campaign. On the one hand, guardians are normally revived from death by their Ghosts. However, Cayde’s ghost died before reviving him resulting in a final death for the Hunter.

Additionally, EXOs possess the ability to reboot their consciousness into another robot body. The number attached to a name denotes the number of lives or iterations experienced. However, this process jeopardizes the psyche of the EXO the more times one is brought back along with possible complications.

Overall, it seems this is indeed Cayde-6 and not Cayde-7. He carries the same demeanor and holds a fractured Ace of Spades hand cannon. That detail might convey it to be the original weapon. Thus either method of revival does not apply to Cayde currently.

Time will tell How Bungie expands the narrative to lead players to this story point. However, fans of Destiny 2 only have a short time to wait. The Final Shape showcase launches on August 22. Stay tuned for our coverage of the event right here in the realm of Lords of Gaming.
