PlayNYC 2023: The Spirits of Whispermoon Preview

The Spirits of Whispermoon

At the recent PlayNYC event, we went hands-on with a ton of upcoming indie games. Among one of the better standouts was The Spirits of Whispermoon. A top-down homage to classic Zelda games. Along with the added component of online co-op multiplayer.

While The Spirits of Whispermoon gameplay is heavily inspired by Zelda, the art direction is more Castlevania. Particularly, this blends the two creating a fresh feeling experience that feels new. Plus, the top-down camera view brings a welcoming style to a handled device like a Steam Deck, which is what we played the game on.

The small indie team only has the bandwidth to develop for one platform at a time but the Unity engine will make porting to other platformers a less daunting task. With that, it could be something we see on consoles in the coming years.

You can follow the developer’s progress here on their Twitter (X?) account. We should have more on The Spirits of Whispermoon next year as it gets closer to a full release or early access.
