TennoCon 2024: Soulframe Devstream Breakdown

Today, at TennoCon 2024, Digital Extremes hosted their very first Devstream dedicated to Soulframe. During this live Devstream, they showcased a whole slew of new content and parts of the character creator. From a new enemy type, and story details to an improved UI to what we saw last year. Here is everything we learned from the first ever Devstream for Soulframe.

First Soulframe Devstream Breakdown

This Devstream focused on the main starting quest for Soulframe called the Warsong Prologue. The opening cinematic appears to be in-engine, and it is very grim. It began with the Ode, the main antagonistic force, laying siege on a castle belonging to the mother of your player character. It was very elaborate, with magic destroying the castle walls, and the Ode striking down soldiers. It was bombastic and exciting. It was explained that the reason the castle was under attack was due to the mother being something called a Night Maiden. She acts as a warden for the various counties of the land.

It was here that we saw how the character creator would play out. You can customize your character from their gender, skin color, hair style and color, as well as the eyes. But considering your character is still a baby in this cutscene, you are instead customizing your mother, and every option has unique poetic narration to it all. One shot we caught a glimpse of was that the Envoy was born with the blue arm, shown off for the first time in the reveal trailer for Soulframe.

From here we got to see more live gameplay, including a new boss and ancestor.

Mission Structures, and New Ancestor Narrative Boss

We got some more free roam gameplay in Midrath island, the first playable open zone in Soulframe that will be twice the size of the Plains of Eidolon from Warframe. We saw that the Bird companion in the game will be your navigator. Where you can snap your fingers to have it lead you to your quest location, and an interesting detail to note is that while it is guiding you, you can see a visible compass to see which direction you are going, making it easier to keep track of things directionally.

They also showed off a new mission type where you can go to a location and kill Ode soldiers outside of a dilapidated ruin to free animals who are stuck in a pool of corrupting liquid. This mission led to the main character being guided by a rat to a new ancestor called Verminia, that gives you an elixir to help defeat a new boss called the Nimrod. The elixir was able to clear the gloomy weather that Nimrod was made invulnerable by, and change the time from night to day instantly, and it was very seamless. From here you unlock Verminia to add to your Nightfold.

Improved UI and Verminia, the Elixir Ancestor

Part of the gameplay they showed was of the Nightfold Tent. The Nightfold is your player hub that you can teleport into at any moment in Soulframe. The Nightfold will allow you to swap weapons, and talk with your ancestors, who act as your vendors. From Orlick your spirit guide who chronicles your journey and quests, to Tuvalkane who crafts you new armor and weapons. They showed off a new ancestor that can appear in your Nightfold called Fen Jotarr, who can augment your weapons and armor.

The UI for customization also got a little bit more love, and they also explained that player Pacts, that take the form of how your right arm looks will essentially function like warframe’s from Warframe. Right down to a system where you able to take these ultimate abilities called Idols that function like exalted weapons from Warframe and can be added to any pacts. In this same menu you can also choose your choice of clothing, and weapons, which Digital Extremes is currently working on adding a secondary weapon option to go alongside the main weapon choices. Which we have seen a sword, and bow so far, but the boss fight against Nimrod used a new Sword and Shield weapon class.

Finally, they showed off that Verminia can change your clothes color at will, and after that introduction, she triggered a cutscene of a tainted Omen beast called Bromius, who was the bear in the Fey Pact trailer. One final thing to note is that the location for finding her before acquiring the Elixir needed for Nimrod was beautifully designed. As she is found in a mysterious ruin with a ray of light shining upon her.

When Can You Expect to Play Soulframe?

Soulframe will be opening its Preludes program, which you can only currently just sign up and wait to be invited to play in, to the general public in the fall of this year. You can sign up to the Soulframe Preludes program here. The game will be free-to-play but only playable on PC in the meantime.
